Key benefits

  • Manage, edit, and post-produce photographs in one place with the help of this full-color guide
  • Adopt a non-destructive approach to working with seemingly infinite copies of photographs with different looks
  • Increase productivity and make your creative process easier with Lightroom's functionality and additional tools

Description

It takes talent to be a great photographer, but in the digital era, it also takes a level of technical proficiency. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic was designed as a one-stop solution for photographers to perfect their final products on a desktop-focused workflow, which includes local storage of your photos in files and folders on your computer. Knowing how to efficiently navigate through Lightroom means that you’ll be able to concentrate on being creative instead of wondering “what does this button do”. Complete with step-by-step explanations of essential concepts and practical examples, you will begin with importing photographs into Lightroom. You’ll focus on how to sort through, sequence, develop, and export ready files in various formats, or even design a book and create gallery-ready prints. Next, you will learn how to make informed decisions within Lightroom and how to approach your work depending on the set of photographs you are working on. This guide also illustrates real-life usage and workflow examples that are not just for aspiring professionals, but also for artists and amateurs who are still getting to grips with the technical side of photography. By the end of this book, you'll be confident in importing, editing, sorting, developing, and delivering your photos like a professional.

Who is this book for?

This is a book for photographers who’ve used Lightroom in the past but need a structured approach to start making the most of its advanced features. If you’re a beginner who’s willing to invest a bit of time in understanding Lightroom’s basic functionality, you can use it just as well – but you may need to look at a few external sources along the way. Essentially, this photography book is for anyone who wants to become proficient enough in Lightroom to make better decisions and focus on creativity instead of the software.

What you will learn

  • Import photographs from different sources
  • Understand how to create and refine edits
  • Use and manage catalogs, folders, and collections
  • Develop photographs using all available tools
  • Prepare files for print and online viewing
  • Create slideshows and book layouts

To say that I'm an amateur photographer would be an understatement. That said, I did by a nice camera for the use of streaming video. In my amateur status I did not realize that the camera I purchased would not do video and so I now have a very nice camera for taking pictures. Which, sadly my iPhone now takes pictures of better quality. All of this is to say that I could use every ounce of help I can get in my new hobby and this book takes you there. It explains Adobe Lightroom Classic in great detail from what everything is to what it does and how to leverage it for social media, print, and beyond! I think that this is a great book even for a complete beginner and I would recommend it!

The biggest problem with digital photography is finding a place to manage and adjust photos. If working professionally, accurately presenting work becomes even more important. “Photographers guide to Adobe Lightroom” (Packt) by Marcin Lewandowski covers using Lightroom Classic to catalog, adjust and modify photos for professional use. The three sections comprehensively review importing photos to the software, improving or changing those photos through development, and then publishing the completed work. The book includes a great number of photos and screenshots showing what the tools do, and how to implement them correctly. The first section deals with bringing elements into the program. While the structure does resemble the hard drive storage, it offers an option for catalogs to group important photos together. Lightroom also offers the option to tag photos in multiple ways through subject, color, rating and others to rapidly search through digital inventories. This type of sorting makes sure the photos one needs to publish can be rapidly found. The middle part talks about all of the options one can use to modify and adjust photos. Everyone knows they wish the initial photo could be adjusted, changing colors, removing those who photo-bombed the picture, or focusing on a particular target. This area goes through all the tools Lightroom offers, and how to use those to improve the basic picture. It also offers technical solutions to watermark photos for protection, or modify for specific clients. Finally, the book discusses various ways to publish the photos one spent hours adjusting and structuring. This looks at straight print of the photo, publishing to a book or slideshow, or using a gallery to showcase work on the web. The final summary reviews the various properties and introduces the stripped down, mobile version of Lightroom vs Lightroom Classic. If I had one complaint, it would be that a lot of the photos didn’t include descriptive labels. While they captured the step by step process, it would be nice to know exactly what was happening in each picture in line with the detailed instructions in the text. Overall, this was a great introduction to Lightroom Classic. If I was a professional photographer, I would see many benefits. Even as a hobbyist, I can see the value in improving family photos and capturing certain events or moments in better detail. I’d recommend this book for anyone looking to improve their ability to capture digital photos, and rapidly sort to help share the images of our lives.

As a long time Lightroom/Photoshop user and mentor, I thought it would be handy to have an up to date reference. This book is poorly written. The paper it is printed on feels like newspaper print. The illustrations are poor. There are many illustrations. They all have a "Fig number" . However there is not a single reference in the text as to what figure goes with a page of text. In several places the text says "the top figure is...., the lower figure...... " But, there's only one illustration on the page. Too often if you can figure that out the illustration worthless. Same dog that all the other images are. One section in the Develop Module states that "the Tone Control is the most feared section by most people". Then goes into a 10 line simplistic explanation that doesn't seem to connect with the opening statement. It certainly is not the least bit helpful. For the ridiculous price of $45/copy the author or publisher should have hired a proof reader.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen.
