Recovering from a system crash

If Cisco IOS is missing or damaged, you have an option to use a bootloader. It has a command line that provides access to the Flash memory. In addition, the bootloader enables you to format the Flash memory, reinstall the IOS, and recoveralost or forgotten password. You can access the bootloader in the following way:

1. Connect your PC to a switchover console cable.
2. Open the Tera Term emulator on your PC and establish a serial connection with a switch.
3. While still consoled into the switch, remove the power cord from the back of the switch, and after one minute, plug it in again.
4. As soon as you note the initialization of the switch in the console session, press and hold down the Mode button while the System LED is still flashing green.
5. When the System LED turns briefly amber and then to solid green, release the Mode button.
