Chapter 11. Current Trends and the Future of Natural Language Processing

In this chapter, we will discuss the latest trends in NLP and what the future will be like. In the first section, we will talk about the latest trends in NLP. Improving the existing models is a key part of the latest trends. This includes improving the performance of existing models (for example, the word embeddings and machine translation systems).

The rest of the chapter is about the novel areas emerging recently in the field of NLP. We will be driving our discussion into five different subareas, drawing on unique and instructive papers from the discipline. First we will see how NLP has ventured into other research fields, such as computer vision and reinforcement learning. Next we will discuss several novel attempts that have been made to achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in NLP, by training a single model to perform several NLP tasks.
