I'm a senior Unity engineer with 8 years experience. My take: Hands-On Unity Game Development is an great resource for beginners and intermediate Unity developers, covering a wide range of topics in detailed yet digestible language. Starting with basic concepts and working its way up step-by-step to more advanced subjects such as AI, augmented reality, and performance optimization, this book does a great job of outlining not only the fundamentals, but also the finer points of building a professional-quality video game in Unity. I'd highly recommend it not only to students and hobbyists looking to make their start in the world's most popular game engine, but also current Unity professionals looking to broaden their knowledge.

Offering a comprehensive look at and walkthrough for Unity's systems across editor tools, art, design, code, and optimization; this textbook is a great place to start or reinforce your development journey with Unity. I was especially impressed by the showcase of Unity's built-in toolsets that I've rarely seen in learning materials (i.e. Probuilder for simple 3D models); they offer a great place to start exploring skills that can be difficult to master in external software such as Autodesk. In a similar vein, the inclusion of visual scripting screenshots throughout the textbook alongside their standard code counterparts is a great way to visualize large blocks of code for learners and those already familiar with Unreal Engine.I do wish 2D game development had a bit more coverage (even if most of the basics are still applicable), as I feel Unity's competent support of both 2D and 3D is a large part of what differentiates it from it's largest competitors, but overall am very satisfied with the quality and quantity of information offered.

I had about 2 years of front end web development when I started messing around with Unity. That was about 3 years ago and I have worked in Unity just about every day since then. I've gotten to the point where I can get around Unity development and scripting pretty well and accomplish most of what I want with enough Googling and Youtube.That said, I always knew that I am probably not doing things in the best or most efficient ways. My code has generally been pretty ugly and I usually have to find round about ways to make things happen.I hoped that this book would help me do things more efficiently and correctly, as well as teach me more of the things that I didn't know I didn't know.I haven't finished all of the chapters yet, but so far the book has met and exceeded every expectation. It works you through many examples that lead to a larger project. The steps are easy to follow and explain why and how things work in language that I can follow along with very easily. As I've worked through the book I have been able to apply steps, processes and techniques that I learn there very easily to my own projects to make them cleaner, more optimized and to clean up my code. The best part is that everything I have learned there works in my projects without needing any additional research to figure out how to apply it to my specific situations. I'm still working through the chapters and loving every page as it is giving me so many extra tools that I never had before.I would recommend this book for beginning to intermediate Unity developers wanting to take their knowledge and skill to the next level.

I am very pleased with the level of detail and quality in this book.I am someone with no formal coding experience and no experience in Unity. I just do roblox game development on the side. I found the guides to be very helpful. I enjoyed the personalization from the author through their memoirs and commentary as they go through each lesson.They explained everything they were doing, and didn't assume that you already knew how to do certain things. There are pictures for quite literally everything and every step, which are very helpful. They also include workarounds and practical tips if things dont work exactly how they should.Their guides cover everything from how to install and setup unity, to making characters, scenes, and realistic graphics. They really cover every thing here, from practical knowledge as well as game development theory. They even have some sample code and assets you can download and use to get started.They start off with easy to grasp lessons, such as inserting and manipulating physical objects in the virtual space. The coding comes later, and it's easier to understand because they use visual coding, which is more institutive for a beginner like me. They slowly shift into more complex lessons.For the price of $48, it is definitely worth it. This is at least a year or more of learning packed into this book. I would highly recommend this book.My only piece of constructive criticism would be to create a copy with a dark background and white text. I think this could help accessibility for some people, especially if they're working on it in the night. Otherwise, this is a really great book. I can tell the effort the authors, editors, and producers put into this book
