Unity 2022 Game Development is worth a look through for anyone who wants to start creating games as a passion or for anyone looking to develop a new skill. Nicolas Alejandro Borromeo does a good job of breaking down all of the sections within the game development life-cycle while teaching the reader how to use Unity to create their rendition of the project. Going over from the simplest concepts of making a Unity project, creating prefabs, and terrain. All the way to height maps, C# scripting, and proper allocation of resources. The chapters are thoroughly filled with information pertaining what part of the game's life cycle the game is at, and the actions that should be taken to continue the development of the game. While also being easy to follow along, you really do not have to have any prior experience with Unity to read through this book and you can still learn something from this book even with prior experience wherever you are on your journey with game development. I would say the only negative is that the chapters are not long enough to fully go into more detail of how to use certain tools and how to use Unity to the fullest potential, but for what the book is trying to do, I would say that this isn't a huge problem. I enjoyed reading and learning more about game design and development with Unity, I hope you guys like it too!

I am impressed that the author covered so much in as few pages (yes, 600+ pages could have been much more when improperly edited). Unity is normally know for C# coding and not visual scripting as is Unreal engine with it's blueprinting system so having a book cover BOTH C# and visual scripting was a treat. As I read through the chapters I noticed the end of the book was nearing I worried not all of the important features would be covered. I was wrong, the book covered all the basics for a novice to be able to move on to more advanced topics. If I had to create a game development book I plan to use this as the frame work for it. This also makes a great reference for mid to senior developers like myself that jump from unity3d to unreal and back again over a course of several years.

If you're a beginner or intermediate user to the Unity engine, this book will help guide you through what Unity has to offer in making a 3D video game. The author Nicolas Alejandro Borromeo designed this book to be user friendly by keeping things as simple as possible while showing how to use different components that will be used in making a game. He introduces you to systems like ProBuilder and Terrain to design your scene, while using the new Input system to handle the player's movement as he wants you to get comfortable using this system for future game developments projects you may work on in the future. Another system he introduces you to is the UI Toolkit which handles the User Interface we see onscreen. While he shows you the standard way of creating user interface, he also introduces you to this UI Toolkit to prepare you on how it will be used as Unity will be replacing the standard way of creating UI with this toolkit. One other system he introduces you to is Visual Scripting. This system is designed for those who don't know how to program, but want to be able to control how their game is played. He shows how to control the player, enemies, and shooting mechanic in this demo game using both C# and Visual Scripting so you have the best of both worlds in learning how to program your game.You learn how to use Lighting, Sound, Particle systems, Post Processing, Animations using the Animator, Cinemachine and Timelines. In the end he goes over optimization using the Profiler, Frame Debugger and Memory profiler with debugging to show the importance of using these tools to help you make a performant efficient game. Final thing he touches on is Augmented Reality by creating a simple game for mobile devices.Nicolas does a great job in giving insightful advice as you go through each chapter to inform you where you should go to next to learn more about the topic you're learning at that moment. This book is an easy read and follow along for those who want to finish the demo game he used in this book. This book is definitely an excellent reference book to have in your collection as you go through your game development journey. Well done Nicolas!

This book takes you through every step you need to understand the Unity engine and get you up and running. Although this textbook would be best in the hands of someone with an understanding of programming, up to OOP principles, the author does a fantastic job walking you through Unity features from installation to augmented reality. This book doesn’t involve coding in every chapter, and without a background in programming, there is still plenty to learn on the features Unity offers.The information is setup in this book using the Unity 2022 version which is always a plus when it comes to learning as things within Unity change rapidly every two years or so. Whether you have a working knowledge of developing within the Unity engine previously or are brand new, this book will walk you through all the topics covered without expecting you to have previous knowledge of the subjects.Nicolas Borromeo takes everything a step further and offers a free repository hosted on GitHub that also includes everything you need broken up by chapter so you can easily find what you need without being distracted by future chapters. This ability to check your work against the repository will be essential if you run into any coding errors as programming can require very specific inputs.Overall, I found this book to be incredibly beginner friendly without shying away from complex topics. With two years of developing experience using the Unity engine, I personally found the book to have been incredibly useful for features I hadn’t previously used before. Whether you are a total beginner or a programmer trying to develop in Unity, this book will be an amazing choice to get you started on your journey.
