Key benefits

  • Develop widely applicable music composition techniques and create full orchestral scores
  • Leverage the power of FL Studio to create your own production-level soundtracks
  • Use cutting-edge tools to fuel your creative ideas and launch your composer career

Description

FL Studio is a cutting-edge software music production environment and a powerful and easy-to-use tool for composing music. In this comprehensive guide, you’ll discover how to use FL Studio's tools and techniques to design exciting soundtracks for your films, TV shows, video games, and much more. You'll start by understanding the business of composing, learning how to communicate, score, market your services, land gigs, and deliver music projects for clients like a professional. Next, you'll set up your studio environment, navigate key tools, such as the channel rack, piano roll, playlist, mixer, and browser, and export songs. The book then advances to show you how to compose orchestral music using MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) programming, with a dedicated section to string instruments. You’ll create sheet music using MuseScore for live musicians to play your compositions. Later, you’ll learn about the art of Foley for recording realistic sound effects, create adaptive music that changes throughout video games, and design music to trigger specific emotions, for example, scary music to terrify your listener. Finally, you'll work on a sample project that will help you prepare for your composing career. By the end of this book, you’ll be able to create professional soundtrack scores for your films and video games.

Who is this book for?

This book is for musicians and programmers who want to take their music composing skills to a professional level. Film directors and game designers who want to get involved in scoring music for their own productions will also find this book useful. All you need is a computer and FL Studio to get started.

As a guitar player myself, and someone that is inclined to learn music software to record audio & help compose music, this book has nicely laid out the functionality of FL Studio. What I liked about this book is that unlike a lot of technical books about music software, the author has also provided useful information about activities that aren't strictly limited to the software including; how to network and collaborate with other musicians/artists, a breakdown of scales & nodes, developing a mindset for composing music depending on the mood requirement for the piece, and even tips on overcoming writer's block. In most chapters the author has aimed to provide some information on a particular topic, while also transposing that knowledge for use in FL Studio. The screenshots provided help give visual reference points for each of the features, and that makes navigating the software much easier. The chapters are well laid out, and each one has a summary at the beginning to give you a brief overview of what the chapter's about. Some of the major topics covered include how to use FL Studio to; compose music for film soundtracks & video games, use music motifs to create emotional music, influence the mood of a piece through music, among other topics.Sure the book can get very technical in terms of the details, but the benefit is that you can stop at whatever point in the chapter suits your goal from each FL studio feature. If I'm buying a book I don't plan on just reading it all in 2 days and moving on. I don't mind having additional information which might be of more value to me at a future point in time when I might want to dive deeper into the software.Bottom line is, like any book there will be information which you find of value and things that you don't like. For me this book has enough useful information to be able to use FL Studio for a variety of goals. The additional guidance and tips on non-FL Studio topics are a bonus, and things that any new musician can benefit from.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
