Mastering React Test-Driven Development

Test-driving Data Input with React

In this chapter, we'll explore React forms and controlled components. We'll work with textboxes, select boxes, and radio buttons to build out these forms:

  • CustomerForm, which is used when adding or modifying customers, with three fields: first name, last name, and phone number
  • AppointmentForm, for adding and modifying appointments, which contains two fields for choosing a salon service and an appointment time

In the process of building these forms, we'll dig deeper into testing complex DOM trees.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • Extracting a test helper
  • Adding a form element
  • Accepting text input
  • Selecting from a dropdown
  • Making a choice from radio buttons

But, first, we will start with a little tidy-up.

Extracting a test helper

The Git tag for this section is extracting-helpers. It contains solutions to the exercises from the previous chapter, so if you haven't completed the Exercises section yourself, then you should move to this tag now so that you're up to date.

For more detailed instructions, see the To get the most out of this book section in the Preface.

In the first chapter, our test suites shared common code for constructing a DOM container element before each test. This element was used as the React root element. By doing this for each test, we avoided modifying global state. Let's extract that code so that we can re-use it across all of our test suites.

The shared code can be split into four parts:

  • A common declaration of container in the describe block, accessible by all tests
  • A beforeEach call to set container to a newly constructed container element...

Adding a form element

Let's create our first form:

  1. Create a new file called test/CustomerForm.test.js and add the following:
import React from 'react';
import { createContainer } from './domManipulators';
import { CustomerForm } from '../src/CustomerForm';

describe('CustomerForm', () => {
let render, container;

beforeEach(() => {
({ render, container } = createContainer());
});
});
The call in the beforeEach block looks a little odd; it's a destructuring assignment where the variables have already been declared. The declaration and assignment are split in this way because the variables must be accessible within the scope of the describe block, but they must also be reassigned for each and every test. Each test gets its own container, independent of the other tests.
  1. Add the following test into the describe block:
it(...

Accepting text input

The Git tag for this section is accepting-text-input.

Let's render an HTML text input field onto the page. Add the following test to test/CustomerForm.test.js:

it('renders the first name field as a text box', () => {
render(<CustomerForm />);
const field = form('customer').elements.firstName;
expect(field).not.toBeNull();
expect(field.tagName).toEqual('INPUT');
expect(field.type).toEqual('text');
});
This test makes use of the DOM form API: any form allows access to all of its input elements using the elements indexer. This is a simpler way of accessing form fields than CSS selectors, so I prefer to use it when it's an option.

There are three expectations in this test:

  • For there to be a form element with the name firstName
  • For it to be an input element
  • For it to have a type of text

Let's...

Selecting from a dropdown

The Git tag for this section is appointment-form.

Let's move on to creating our appointment form. This form is used to book an appointment for a customer. The first field is the service the customer requires: cut, color, blow-dry, and so on:

  1. Create a new file, test/AppointmentForm.test.js, with the following test and setup:
import React from 'react';
import { createContainer } from './domManipulators';
import { AppointmentForm } from '../src/AppointmentForm';

describe('AppointmentForm', () => {
let render, container;

beforeEach(() => {
({ render, container } = createContainer());
});

const form = id =>
container.querySelector(`form[id="${id}"]`);

it('renders a form', () => {
render(<AppointmentForm />);
expect(form('appointment')).not.toBeNull(...

Making a choice from radio buttons

The Git tag for this section is time-slot-table.

It's time to apply what we've learn to a more complicated HTML setup. In this section, we'll test-drive a whole bunch of interconnected elements. To make things harder, we'll also be manipulating times and dates using the standard JavaScript Date object. As you'll soon see, our tests give us a structure to our work that makes even complicated scenarios straightforward.

We'd like to display available time slots over the next seven days as a grid, with columns representing days and rows representing 30-minute time slots, just like a standard calendar view. The user will be able to quickly find a time slot that works for them and then select the right radio button before submitting the form:

Here's an example of the HTML structure that we're aiming to build...

Summary

This chapter has covered usage of four HTML form elements: textboxes, selects, radio buttons, and, of course, labels.

Although these controls are basic, we've used this opportunity to dig much deeper into test-driven React. We've built controlled components, used defaultProps, and split our top-level component into a hierarchy of smaller components and plain JavaScript functions.

We've also gone much further with Jest. We extracted common test logic into modules, used nested describe blocks, and built assertions using the document.form property and CSS selectors.

In Chapter 3, Exploring Test Doubles, we'll discover how to get data into and out of our components using the fetch API.

Exercises

The Git tag for this section is chapter-2-exercises.
  • Add the ability to choose a stylist before choosing a time slot. This should be a dropdown that filters based on the service required, as not all stylists will be qualified to provide all services. You'll need to decide on a suitable data structure to hold this data. Modify availableTimeSlots to list which stylists are available at each time, and update the table to reflect which stylist has been chosen and their availability during the week.

Key benefits

  • Learn the TDD process using the React framework
  • Build complex, real-world applications with a pragmatic approach to TDD
  • Use Cucumber for acceptance and BDD testing, bringing TDD to the wider team

Description

Many programmers are aware of TDD but struggle to apply it beyond basic examples. This book teaches how to build complex, real-world applications using Test-Driven Development (TDD). It takes a first principles approach to the TDD process using plain Jest and includes test-driving the integration of libraries including React Router, Redux, and Relay (GraphQL). Readers will practice systematic refactoring while building out their own test framework, gaining a deep understanding of TDD tools and techniques. They will learn how to test-drive features such as client- and server-side form validation, data filtering and searching, navigation and user workflow, undo/redo, animation, LocalStorage access, WebSocket communication, and querying GraphQL endpoints. The book covers refactoring codebases to use the React Router and Redux libraries. via TDD. Redux is explored in depth, with reducers, middleware, sagas, and connected React components. The book also covers acceptance testing using Cucumber and Puppeteer. The book is fully up to date with React 16.9 and has in-depth coverage of hooks and the ‘act’ test helper.

Who is this book for?

The target audience for this book is JavaScript developers who are looking to implement test-driven and behavior-driven approaches for their React applications.

What you will learn

  • Build test-driven applications using React 16.9+ and Jest
  • Build complete web applications using a variety of HTML input elements
  • Understand the different types of test double and when to apply them

Great book with all steps covered. Excellent even for absolute TDD beginners.Also a good book to discover on how to use react associated libraries (redux, graphql, react router).Recommended to learn testing react.May need to supply with some research to better understand some of the libraries used.The best part: exercices and solutions on github

I find Daniel Irvine's approach sound and helpful from the first page.Spending some few months building apps in React and Redux, I felt like I was writing Javascript in the wild ( I saw this term somewhere, I don't remember where...) With the clear steps described in Mastering React Test-Driven Development, I know that I am in good hands. The methods are clearly explained and reasoned.And the good practices introduced ( practically ) are most useful regardless of language or framework.Absolutely fantastic work by a good and experienced developer.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
