I found the contents of the book to be flowing very well with everything concerning a new or a mid level manager. There are some helpful tips that are easy to follow and are well structured. This book deals with the core tenets of Engineering leadership and is suitable for new and mid level managers alike. Would have loved to read this book when starting off in Engineering management!Although this book is very good, inward focussed read, it would be good to supplement it in the future (perhaps new instalment!) with various real world scenarios once Engineering Managers get comfortable with leadership challenges, such as;* Managing in various combinations of outsourced vs insourced teams* Vendor selection (software partners), buy vs build decision making tips, team structure & location choosing strategies in the modern day* Being successful in startups Vs large companies - as they are very differentYes, these are perhaps advanced topics!

I appreciate that this book caters to managers trying to understand the ethos of their new role, as well as seasoned leaders aiming to refine their methods. This is a book I wish I had, both for guidance and to share with my team when I was a founder. Far more than just a compendium of best practices, it draws a clear distinction between mere management and transformative leadership. The chapters on common pitfalls for new managers and resilient leadership not only diagnose issues but also offer practical solutions and preventative strategies. It's truly a masterclass in understanding the intricate dance of managing and leading software engineering teams.

This book helped me understand why I struggle to answer the question, "What makes a great EM?" in under 255 characters. The quality of writing is outstanding. Dense topics are organized in digestible blocks of content, with an emphasis on the fundamentals but pointers to additional material for further exploration. Substantial rigorous thought, and zero fluff. This book is for:- Experienced managers looking to self-reflect on their role as jacks of all trades, masters of none.- New managers or aspiring ones who want to understand the life of an EM and where to start.Managers of managers who want a concise, approachable reference to the answer to, "What do you expect from your engineering managers?"- Referencing a series of reflective feedback templates that can be used to guide growth for yourself or your organization.- Developing an appreciation for a role that is hard to explicitly measure but is felt when it is lacking. Many leadership resources are rooted in general ideals and biases, more motivational, aspirational. This book is more actionable, pragmatic, applicable; it’s evident that the author drew upon their extensive experience in developing engineering managers and organizations.I hope Morgan continues to author books for other roles. Director of Engineering next, perhaps?

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
