Key benefits

  • Find out how to use SketchUp Free, Go, or Pro to create print-ready models
  • Work through clearly illustrated examples to learn just how to design for 3D printing
  • Model multiple pieces that can be assembled post-print

Description

Working with the amazing 3D printing technology and getting access to the printing hardware is now easier than ever before. While there are many other resources that cover the general process of 3D printing, this book is the ultimate guide to creating models for 3D printing using SketchUp. You’ll start with a basic understanding of how SketchUp is used in the 3D printing workflow and jump into the steps to create a print-ready model using only SketchUp. This 3D printing book will guide you in using SketchUp to modify existing 3D files and cover additional tools that make SketchUp an even more powerful modeling tool. As you advance, you’ll learn how to transform 2D images into 3D printable solids, how to create multi-part prints that can be assembled without the use of fasteners or glue, and how to make sure your model, whether designed from scratch or assembled from preexisting geometry, is ready to be made real via your 3D printer. By the end of this book, you’ll have the confidence to bring your design ideas to life by generating your own 3D print-ready models with SketchUp.

Who is this book for?

If you own or have access to a 3D printer and are tired of downloading and printing other people's 3D models, this book is for you! Learn how to use SketchUp to create your own custom pieces or modify existing files so you can print exactly what you need. Whether you are an architect hoping to print buildings, a designer needing quick physical prototypes, or a hobbyist wanting to print a tchotchke, this book is for you. Readers should have completed some training in fundamentals in SketchUp and be able to create and edit basic geometry.

What you will learn

  • Understand SketchUp's role in the 3D printing workflow
  • Generate print-ready geometry using SketchUp
  • Import existing files for editing in SketchUp
  • Verify whether a model is ready to be printed or not
  • Model from a reference object and use native editing tools
  • Explore the options available for adding onto SketchUp for the purpose of 3D printing (extensions)
  • Understand the steps to export a file from SketchUp

This book is presents, in a very clear and approachable manner, the ins and outs of using SketchUp to create models for 3D printing. While it assumes the user has a fundamental knowledge of using the basic tools in SketchUp, Mr. Dietzen presents the process in an easy to understand way. From the tone of the book it is obvious that Aaron not only knows the topic very well, he actually enjoys doing what he describes. He includes numerous illustrations and step-by-step procedures. If you follow his instruction you should be very successful in creating your own 3D printable objects.

If there is one thing that I support wholeheartedly, it's putting new and useful technology into the hands of as many people as possible. Your whole take on problem solving changes when you are granted the kind of freedom that 3D printing allows. This book is a great bridge to that capability. 3D printers vary widely, but the prices are improving. That just leaves the other side of it: how do you get the things to print? With this, you have a very usable option. To be honest, starting my 3D printing manufacture work in Blender, I never really considered SketchUp. I had used it in the past, but didn't realize how widely functional it was and, in many ways, preventing the headaches that other design platforms may go through. That, and the author's contribution of not only expertise but insights into the intuitive process of modeling for printing (which has its own set of challenges) makes it both useful as a learning tool and an enjoyable read.In all, definitely a great pick for someone looking to dive into design for 3D printing but not sure what design application is best suited for their needs!

I have been casually 3D printing with SketchUp for a few years. Aaron's book taught me to model smarter for 3D printing. We needed an adaptor to use detail tools with a new mini vacuum that we just bought. A few hours later, we had it in hand thanks to 3D Printing with SketchUp. I will continue to use the workflows and pro tips found in this awesome book to bring my SketchUp models into the real world. Whether you are an experienced SketchUp user or brand new to the world of 3D modeling and printing, this book is an excellent resource!

Very well written book, which allowed me to understand SketchUP and 3D Printing. I’m familiar with SketchUP as an Interior Designer and having knowledge on creating models that can be printed is awesome. I look forward to creating exciting project using techniques I learned from this book.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
