Considerations for a WAN design


A WAN is a network that connects other networks over large distances. A WAN is typically owned by a service provider, and organizations pay the lease rentals or usage charges to use these links. The WAN could be a dedicated link between two sites, or might be a shared network that is used to provide connectivity between networks of an organization at different geographical locations.

Each type of WAN link has its own advantages and disadvantages. Thus, choosing the right technology for a WAN link is fundamental to obtaining a balance between the cost incurred on the connectivity, and the business benefits this connectivity provides to the organization. Some of the main factors to be considered for the WAN design are as follows:
