Description

Puppeteer is an open source web automation library created by Google to perform tasks such as end-to-end testing, performance monitoring, and task automation with ease. Using real-world use cases, this book will take you on a pragmatic journey, helping you to learn Puppeteer and implement best practices to take your automation code to the next level! Starting with an introduction to headless browsers, this book will take you through the foundations of browser automation, showing you how far you can get using Puppeteer to automate Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. You’ll then learn the basics of end-to-end testing and understand how to create reliable tests. You’ll also get to grips with finding elements using CSS selectors and XPath expressions. As you progress through the chapters, the focus shifts to more advanced browser automation topics such as executing JavaScript code inside the browser. You’ll learn various use cases of Puppeteer, such as mobile devices or network speed testing, gauging your site’s performance, and using Puppeteer as a web scraping tool. By the end of this UI testing book, you’ll have learned how to make the most of Puppeteer’s API and be able to apply it in your real-world projects.

Who is this book for?

The book is for QA engineers, testing professionals, and frontend web developers alike who want to perform end-to-end testing using Google's developer tools. Web developers who want to learn how to use Puppeteer for generating content, scraping websites, and evaluating website performance will also find this book useful. Although knowledge of Node.js isn’t necessary, basic JavaScript knowledge will assist with understanding the concepts covered.

- The role of tester has evolved a lot. Some years ago this role was delegated only to a QA team, but now, I think this is something that every software developer should know. Dario (the author of this book), makes an excellent job highlighting why testing is not only for the QA team.- The UI Testing with Puppeteer book is one of those books that I recommend to every software developer to read. Especially because it goes far beyond of common testing books.- Something to highlight is that the author does not go directly to the main topics, first, the author makes an excellent job introducing or presenting fundamental elements such as: foundations of the web (HTML, CSS, and Javascript), or foundations of the testing (what is a test, what are the types of tests, which people should be involved in each type of test, how tests are evolved, and how to write good tests). All those elements are perfectly explained and summarized. If you read the book, you will understand why it is very critical to understand fundamental concepts of HTML, CSS, and Javascript before going to UI testing.- During the entire book you will find a lot of tools and elements which enrich your toolbox. Tools such as Github actions, Checkly, Puppeteer recorded, Visual Studio Code, and Chrome DevTools. Just a quick example, I have used Chrome DevTools during the last 8 years, but I didn’t know some excellent commands and options that this tool provides. I was like wow, I can’t believe how I didn’t know these elements in the past.- Interesting elements about UI testing include: website navigation, interacting with the website elements, testing network calls, screenshots, UI regression test with screenshots, manipulating javascript, environment simulations (such as mobile or tablets), and the last chapters include content generation with pdf, web scraping, and performance evaluation. Even the book takes you to emulate vision issues related with accessibility (such as achromatopsia, and blurred-vision).- This book is totally recommended, and therefore, you will find some funny jokes.

The book goes from the idea of why you need to test and why it's important to, into the deeps of browser automation and the endless possibilities that it offers. Having no previous background in the area, I learned enough to be able to incorporate the concepts into my day-to-day tasks. The book is very easy to read and follow, but is also really focused, and explains in detail how to succeed in complex automation tasks. And also along the way, you will end up with a nice set of tools that will help your day-to-day and make you a better overall professional. You won't regret reading it.

It also takes about css selectors and xpath as well. To Implement puppeteer in your real time project,I find this book easy to follow. My approach was take it slow, step by step, chapter by chapter and soon you will gain confidence while doing UI testing with Puppeteer.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release.
