Key benefits

  • Get started with programming in Java with this step-by-step guide for experienced programmers
  • Re-enforce your knowledge of object-oriented methodologies applied in Java
  • Develop the range of skills necessary for you to become a successful Java developer

Description

This comprehensive guide will help non-Java developers already using different languages transition from their current language to all things Java. The chapters are designed in a way that re-enforces a developer’s existing knowledge of object-oriented methodologies as they apply to Java. This book has been divided into four sections, with each section touching upon different aspects that’ll enable your effective transition. The first section helps you get to grips with the Java development environment and the Maven build tool for modern Java applications. In the second section, you’ll learn about Java language fundamentals, along with exploring object-oriented programming (OOP) methodologies and functional programming and discovering how to implement software design patterns in Java. The third section shows you how to code in Java on different platforms and helps you get familiar with the challenges faced on these platforms. In the fourth section, you’ll find out how you can manage and package your Java code. By the end of this Java programming book, you’ll have learned the core concepts of Java that’ll help you successfully transition from a different language to Java.

Who is this book for?

This book is for anyone who is currently working with other programming languages and wishes to add Java to their skillset. Prior working experience as a developer using languages other than Java is expected, although no prior knowledge of Java is required.

What you will learn

  • Gain a solid understanding of the syntax in Java
  • Explore the object-oriented programming basics of the Java language
  • Discover how to implement functions in Java
  • Understand which Java frameworks would be best for solving various problems
  • Explore creational, structural, and behavioral patterns in Java
  • Get to grips with server-side coding in Java

I did struggle to review this book as I found existing members of my team kept 'borrowing' my copy....We found this to be a really useful book not just for new Java Devs but existing ones as well looking to fill in gaps in their knowledge. There are a lot of technologies you need to keep up with (Maven, Jakarta, etc) and this really fills the sweet spot. If you are an existing Java developer, this is also a great book to dip into for those topics and making sure all your Java skills are top notch.

Ken Fogel's book covers an impressive amount of material in a concise, readable way. No book on Java can be complete and comprehensive, but this book covers a broad spectrum, from choosing among Java versions to the specifics of Java documentation. He includes a chapter on build tools and a part on deployment. His chapter on enterprise Java with Jakarta is particularly useful. The book's audience includes anyone who can write programs in other imperative languages, such as C/C++, Python, and JavaScript. Ken doesn't assume previous exposure to object-oriented programming, but experience with OOP is definitely helpful. I rarely meet someone who can appreciate objects and classes when they first read about them. It's never easy to write about a technical topic in a way that's both easy to understand and technically correct. I've read many works that sacrifice clarity in favor of accuracy or vice versa. But while reviewing this book, I was struck by the many explanations that were right on target. Ken has a gift for writing exactly what needs to be written -- no more and no less.Full disclosure: I know Ken Fogel and speak with him frequently at professional events. We don't see eye-to-eye about the value of "Hello world" examples and his first chapter on language fundamentals illustrates his point of view. I would have approached this introductory material a bit differently, but I respect Ken's opinion and agree to disagree.Overall, I give Ken Fogel's book a rating of "Excellent," and I recommend it to anyone moving from other languages to Java.

This book will help you effectively transfer to Java and unlock your full programming potential, whether you are a beginner or an experienced programmer.

This book takes readers from the very beginning of installing Java, and down to the details of developing sophisticated applications using Java. As the book is meant to be read by those who are already familiar with another programming language, this book does that well. It provides the necessary details of programming in Java, and also provides some comparisons to other popular languages for those who are familiar.Ken Fogel does an excellent job of explaining the various concepts of the language. He was a professor, and his teaching experience shines through in this book. He has a knack for providing the correct amount of detail on the many topics without becoming too verbose. The concepts are explained well, and readers will go away with a clear understanding of the language and some of its various APIs.I recommend downloading the code and following along with the examples. In part one, the book teaches how install Java, configure your environment, and how to run Java code from the command line as well as from within an Integrated Development Environment. Part two runs though the different concepts of the Java language itself using short examples...providing a primer for writing entire applications. Part three dives into developing applications, as it provides details on using Java Swing and JavaFX to create user interfaces, and Jakarta EE for developing web applications. In part four, the book finishes up by explaining how to create a distributable packaged application, and how to deploy a web application. It even touches on packaging applications using Docker. All in all, this is a great book for those transitioning, as well as those who are familiar with Java, but wish to gain a solid understanding of the language and some of the more widely used APIs.I have known Ken Fogel for a number of years. We met at Java conferences, and I always enjoy discussing The Java ecosystem with him. While reading this book, I enjoyed the way in which the concepts were explained. Very clear and concise, much like his explanations during our conference discussions.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
