Key benefits

  • Get up and running with common design patterns and TDD best practices
  • Learn to apply the rhythms of TDD – arrange, act, assert and red, green, refactor
  • Understand the challenges of implementing TDD in the Java ecosystem and build a plan

Description

Test-driven development enables developers to craft well-designed code and prevent defects. It’s a simple yet powerful tool that helps you focus on your code design, while automatically checking that your code works correctly. Mastering TDD will enable you to effectively utilize design patterns and become a proficient software architect. The book begins by explaining the basics of good code and bad code, bursting common myths, and why Test-driven development is crucial. You’ll then gradually move toward building a sample application using TDD, where you’ll apply the two key rhythms -- red, green, refactor and arrange, act, assert. Next, you’ll learn how to bring external systems such as databases under control by using dependency inversion and test doubles. As you advance, you’ll delve into advanced design techniques such as SOLID patterns, refactoring, and hexagonal architecture. You’ll also balance your use of fast, repeatable unit tests against integration tests using the test pyramid as a guide. The concluding chapters will show you how to implement TDD in real-world use cases and scenarios and develop a modern REST microservice backed by a Postgres database in Java 17. By the end of this book, you’ll be thinking differently about how you design code for simplicity and how correctness can be baked in as you go.

Who is this book for?

This book is for expert Java developers and software architects crafting high-quality software in Java. Test-Driven Development with Java can be picked up by anyone with a strong working experience in Java who is planning to use Test-driven development for their upcoming projects.

This book is definitely worth reading as it covers the benefits of working in a test-driven development environment and explain the challenges of implementing TDD in the java ecosystem and how to build a plan around it. Direct, to the point, the author's style is easy to read. The best practises for using unit tests are covered in great detail and in great depth in the book. The examples are numerous, and it is simple to read. It's clear from the book's content that the author has a wealth of knowledge in the practical field. You will undoubtedly learn something new and valuable from this book. The book discusses how to implement TDD in real world scenarios.

In any software project, the objective is to try and deliver a bug-free product to the end customer. While 100% bug-free delivery might be difficult to achieve, it is possible to reduce the number of bugs by following a Test Driven Development approach. This book teaches that exactly but covers how developers can incorporate TDD as part of their development process for Java-based projects. This book will enable you to write well-engineered, well-tested code. This book is for developers who know Java and want to learn how to incorporate TDD as part of their coding practice. This book is divided into three parts. The first part (i.e. the first three chapters) explains why and how TDD became a part of the development process. Chapter two especially talks about good practices to be followed to deliver well-engineered code. The Second part delves more into the technical details of how TDD techniques are to be implemented including how to set up our development environment. This section covers/explains SOLID design principles, Stubs and Mocks techniques, and Hexagonal Architecture (Design Technique). The concepts have been explained in a very easy-to-understand manner and the question at the end of each chapter are well-framed. The further reading section will help the learner cement their knowledge.Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about TDD and how to implement it effectively as part of their daily coding life.

This is a great book that explains the reasons and the benefits of working within a test driven development environment. The author's style is direct, straight to the point, focused on TDD and how to implement it.The book gives a very detailed and comprehensive overview of best practices with unit tests. It's easy to read and it has a lot of examples. Clearly, the author has a lot of experience in the area that he shares with the audience in this book. No matter what your current level is - you'll definitelly find something useful and new in this book. The book explains not just the technical view of testing (like what attributes your test class should have), but also the business client need for testing and how those two are related. I'll definitely recommend this book to everyone interested in learning the TDD.

Upfront disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book from the publisher.I found the book to be a really nice in-depth look into how to do professional development with Test Driven Development, with basic enough language and examples for someone just getting started, and enough depth to sharpen the skills of a developer experienced with testing. I have more than a decade of experience developing Java apps with fortune 500 companies, and found several new approaches that I'm likely to use in my day to day work. The author described a step-by-step approach to developing a Wordle type application from a fresh repo and an InteliJ setup using different TDD approaches for each part culminating in a fully working app. For me, I have always worked best having a concrete example, rather than the Vehicle - Car - Engine type abstract example that is hard to connect to my real world messiness. The only con I have is with the first couple chapters establishing good vs bad coding are a bit lacking. I see what the author was trying to achieve, but they I found that they were oddly specific and not comprehensive enough.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
