Description

DevOps and the cloud have changed how we look at software development and operations like never before, leading to the rapid growth of various DevOps tools, techniques, and practices. This updated edition helps you pick up the right tools by providing you with everything you need to get started with your DevOps journey. The book begins by introducing you to modern cloud-native architecture, and then teaches you about the architectural concepts needed to implement the modern way of application development. The next set of chapters helps you get familiarized with Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, Packer, and other similar tools to enable you to build a base. As you advance, you’ll explore the core elements of cloud integration—AWS ECS, GKE, and other CaaS services. The chapters also discuss GitOps, continuous integration, and continuous delivery—GitHub actions, Jenkins, and Argo CD—to help you understand the essence of modern app delivery. Later, you’ll operate your container app in production using a service mesh and apply AI in DevOps. Throughout the book, you’ll discover best practices for automating and managing your development lifecycle, infrastructure, containers, and more. By the end of this DevOps book, you'll be well-equipped to develop and operate applications using modern tools and techniques.

If you are a software engineer, system administrator, or operations engineer looking to step into the world of DevOps within public cloud platforms, this book is for you. The Author has covered essential topics such as GitOps, Containerization(Docker), Kubernetes, Terraform (IaC), Ansible and Packer. The book delves into CI/CD practices using GitHub Actions and Jenkins, while also emphasizing security measures and testing strategies. Additionally, it provides a valuable understanding of KPIs(Service-Level A|I|Os) for production services and explores advanced topics like Istio for traffic management. The author successfully balances theoretical concepts with hands-on approaches, making it an essential read for those aiming to enhance their proficiency in modern DevOps and SRE practices.

Just got my hands on a copy, and I would say that the book is well-structured and effective. It targets aspiring and current DevOps Engineers, mainly focusing on the implementation aspects. The author doesn't take long to deep dive into practical aspects before briefly introducing DevOps in the first chapter. The book provides all the skills needed to become a DevOps engineer, starting with Git, Containers, Kubernetes, IaC with Terraform, CaC with Ansible, Immutable Infrastructure with Packer, and then moves on to SaaS-based tools that can help implement all of them. The author emphasizes GitOps as a guiding light, and the example application used in the later chapters to explain CI and CD, as well as Security and Operations using Istio and other tools, is an absolute gem! I totally recommend this for anyone who wants to get started with DevOps and wants to get their hands dirty.

Basically, I’d say it’s not a book that you read cover to cover. You use this type of publication according to your needs — if you for example know a lot about Docker then you can just skim-read that particular chapter to search for some concepts, no need to read it in full in such a case. There’s a good example of how to use the concepts presented in this publication based on the Blog App exercise — it’s a thorough case where the author presents concepts described in the book in a practical format.Overall — as the title suggests, it’s a publication about Modern DevOps Practices. If you resonate with concepts presented in this book then go for it, you’ll learn a lot.

The book lives up to its promise of providing the readers with everything that they would need to begin their career as a DevOps Engineer. It has an extremely well-set flow, and the author not only provides knowledge of core concepts and tools associated with them, but the practical nature of the book allows the readers to have a more hands-on experience, making the learning more enjoyable. It covers almost all topics that you would want to learn to practice DevOps within your organization. The best part of the book is the example Blog App that the author uses to explain the concepts. It feels like you are building an Application and then using DevOps around it to Build, Test, Deliver, Secure, and Operate it effectively using cutting-edge tools.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
