Key benefits

  • Get up and running with containerization-as-a-service and infrastructure automation in the public cloud
  • Learn container security techniques and secret management with Cloud KMS, Anchore Grype, and Grafeas Kritis
  • Leverage the combination of DevOps, GitOps, and automation to continuously ship a package of software

Description

Containers have entirely changed how developers and end-users see applications as a whole. With this book, you'll learn all about containers, their architecture and benefits, and how to implement them within your development lifecycle. You'll discover how you can transition from the traditional world of virtual machines and adopt modern ways of using DevOps to ship a package of software continuously. Starting with a quick refresher on the core concepts of containers, you'll move on to study the architectural concepts to implement modern ways of application development. You'll cover topics around Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, Packer, and other similar tools that will help you to build a base. As you advance, the book covers the core elements of cloud integration (AWS ECS, GKE, and other CaaS services), continuous integration, and continuous delivery (GitHub actions, Jenkins, and Spinnaker) to help you understand the essence of container management and delivery. The later sections of the book will take you through container pipeline security and GitOps (Flux CD and Terraform). By the end of this DevOps book, you'll have learned best practices for automating your development lifecycle and making the most of containers, infrastructure automation, and CaaS, and be ready to develop applications using modern tools and techniques.

Who is this book for?

If you are a software engineer, system administrator, or operations engineer looking to step into the world of DevOps within public cloud platforms, this book is for you. Existing DevOps engineers will also find this book useful as it covers best practices, tips, and tricks to implement DevOps with a cloud-native mindset. Although no containerization experience is necessary, a basic understanding of the software development life cycle and delivery will help you get the most out of the book.

What you will learn

  • Become well-versed with AWS ECS, Google Cloud Run, and Knative
  • Discover how to build and manage secure Docker images efficiently
  • Understand continuous integration with Jenkins on Kubernetes and GitHub actions
  • Get to grips with using Spinnaker for continuous deployment/delivery
  • Manage immutable infrastructure on the cloud with Packer, Terraform, and Ansible
  • Explore the world of GitOps with GitHub actions, Terraform, and Flux CD

Examples and technical descriptions are very easy to understand and follow.Worth reading.Best part is tips which is practically helpful after gathering tall the technical knowhow.I think non-technical person can also understand this book and apply the knowledge. This book has perfect sequence of tools described and makes easy to connect all the understanding after a read. This book may not help individuals who are still working on old DevOps tool stack in a monolith environment without Infrastructure as Code practice , such as Terraform. It lacks terraform cloud and module part , thought that would require a separate book altogether! Also includes the GitOps section which is really easy to understand after reading. Heavily focused on containers and tools around it. I am SRE who works beside DevOps and I think this book would help any DevOps career seeker.Described tools and principles are all latest that are being used in startups and enterprises. Thanks for taking time to write the book.

Having a 11+ year of experience in IT industry and worked on many technologies and tools, I recently started my journey in DevOps and public cloud. Currently working as Senior SRE which require knowledge all around on different DevOps tool on multiple public cloud platform. It is not only about what tool you are using/selecting, it's about how you apply those tools to get best out of it and security concern around those tools.WHY I LIKED THE BOOK: This books explain the best practices, helps you to pick the right tools(not mandate to use the tool mentioned but give you the hint to pick the right one). Target of the book is around the approach and techniques with well explained practical examples. This book covers major tools which you may have heard of or using today. From basics of VMs, Containers, docker, K8s, IAC(infrastructure as Code), code management, configuration management tooling and how to used these in your CI/CD approach with real examples. This also covers the security and monitoring aspect of each tool. This is being ignored most of the time, but require more focused aspect of DEVOPS journey in modern world.I found book covers Docker and K8s well in depth, which will help for docker or K8s exams.WHO THIS BOOK TARGET TO: This book can be used by anyone from starter or expert in DEVOPS. This book can be used as reference while you carryout your task. It start from zero(beginner) and take you to advance(expert) topics.

So everything is green, you’ve got the green light from the business, you’ve got a green field deployment to set up, but unfortunately you’re also green when it comes to effective use of DevOps. I highly recommend this book to help you with the latter. The book explores at the best practices in DevOps and how to actually achieve them, no more endless conversations and drawing diagrams. This book delivers what it sets out to, which is to practically walk through how to achieve the ideal DevOps set up from an engineer, administrator, and operations perspective. The use of tools is reasonably opinionated but the book does a good job at explaining what the role of each tool is, so you can look at (or be told to look at) alternatives. Being opinionated is necessary for the book as the author obviously has lots of experience and has the battle scars to prove it. Also, this means there are loads of practical examples to use, there’s downloadable content to support this on GitHub as well, which is really useful. The demos are free, if not nearly free, as well. There is a mention of existing workloads (rehosting) but this book is probably more recommending the refactoring of workloads to make them cloud native as a goal of “Modern DevOps”. This is of course a change to the solution architecture (and code) as well as the processes to develop, test, deploy, and operate the solution (the DevOps bit). Great message here, yeah you can “lift & shift” to cloud but why exactly? Use the cloud, and use it to its strengths.I think the theme of the book is that DevOps needn’t be too difficult to achieve from a purest ‘techy’ point of view (this book more than gives you enough to do just that), often the challenge is buy in from those up high. As mentioned in the section about Hashicorp Packer, companies find it daunting to euthanise their much-loved pets and use the new automated approach. This book doesn’t try to help you much with that, but it never really set out to. It does however give you the confidence and understanding of the subject from a technical viewpoint, that is very valuable indeed. Get it set up and run a demo with your customer/employer would be a great approach!I think I may have added a little more about the coalface of development… The IDE or workstation. More people are virtualising this these days but there’s not much about that in the book. It tells you have to setup your machine very well, so maybe just do this in AWS Cloud9 or something, automated of course ;)If you’re a “techy” wanting to go from zero to DevOps hero then this book will do just nicely.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access.
