Description

Often referred to (incorrectly) as Golang, Go is the high-performance systems language of the future. Mastering Go, Second Edition helps you become a productive expert Go programmer, building and improving on the groundbreaking first edition. Mastering Go, Second Edition shows how to put Go to work on real production systems. For programmers who already know the Go language basics, this book provides examples, patterns, and clear explanations to help you deeply understand Go’s capabilities and apply them in your programming work. The book covers the nuances of Go, with in-depth guides on types and structures, packages, concurrency, network programming, compiler design, optimization, and more. Each chapter ends with exercises and resources to fully embed your new knowledge. This second edition includes a completely new chapter on machine learning in Go, guiding you from the foundation statistics techniques through simple regression and clustering to classification, neural networks, and anomaly detection. Other chapters are expanded to cover using Go with Docker and Kubernetes, Git, WebAssembly, JSON, and more. If you take the Go programming language seriously, the second edition of this book is an essential guide on expert techniques.

Who is this book for?

Mastering Go, Second Edition is for Go programmers who already know the language basics, and want to become expert Go practitioners.

Keeping a programming language in your head isn't easy. It's easier with Go than most because, well, the Go team wanted it that way, but still, I love a reference. The sections in this book are clear, concise, and something I can easily skim through to refresh on a topic before I have to dive into some code. I was working with a colleague and we needed to implement a buffered channel for something and I wanted to go through the thinking from locks, to unbuffered channels, to buffered channels and we were able to get through it easily.

I've been using Go for the last 3 years or so, for my own programming needs at the command line. I learned quite a lot from this book. There have been a few changes in Go since I first learned it. A strong point for me is that Mastering Go, 2nd ed, explains these new features, and I needed that. The book is current up to Go 1.13.It uses a plain, conversational style which I find helpful. It covers the basics of the language, as one would expect. Oddly, it introduces advanced topics before discussing more basic topics on which the advanced subjects depend. This is why I would not recommend this book as a first book on Go.From this book, I learned about go modules and vendoring, the non-core packages of cobra and viper, and more detail on network coding and writing web clients and servers.I also appreciated its coverage of background topics, like more details on the garbage collector and web assembly. I don't use docker, but I was interested in the detailed instructions if I would ever decide to use it.All the examples in the book were primarily written and tested using macOS, and secondarily tested on a debian linux system. It does not specifically address Windows, and that is a weakness.Overall, however, I'm very glad I read this.

Before I tell you about this book, I think it's important to disclose that I do Go training for a living. This means that I'm constantly writing material on Go and presenting it to developers of all levels. One of the fundamental mistakes that many books make is assuming the reader knows more background about a specific topic than they necessarily do.This book, however, does not make those assumptions. In ever chapter, before even talking about code, it lays out the terminology and concepts that will play a factor in the code that is about to be written. It also builds on one topic at a time, so that you can see the effect that each piece of code makes as you add new features. This book will take you from the fundamentals of Go through some of the most advanced topics, such as concurrency, optimization, and profiling. When you finish this book, you will have a very strong grasp of not only the Go programming language, but the Go ecosystem, tooling, and style that will ensure you write robust, maintainable code.

I have just started reading Mastering Go, 2nd edition. The book contains many useful examples that can help someone learn Go and write Go code as well. What I find really handy is that it contains the required theory to understand the why of topics such Go data types, data structures, the Go Garbage Collector and the Go Scheduler.Overall, a great book.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.
