Key benefits

  • Completely revised and updated for Ansible 4.0 and beyond
  • Tackle complex automation challenges with the newly added features in Ansible
  • Learn about the rapidly expanding field of network automation using Ansible, with the help of practical examples for configuring network devices

Description

Ansible is a modern, YAML-based automation tool (built on top of Python, one of the world’s most popular programming languages) with a massive and ever-growing user base. Its popularity and Python underpinnings make it essential learning for all in the DevOps space. This fourth edition of Mastering Ansible provides complete coverage of Ansible automation, from the design and architecture of the tool and basic automation with playbooks to writing and debugging your own Python-based extensions. You'll learn how to build automation workflows with Ansible’s extensive built-in library of collections, modules, and plugins. You'll then look at extending the modules and plugins with Python-based code and even build your own collections — ultimately learning how to give back to the Ansible community. By the end of this Ansible book, you'll be confident in all aspects of Ansible automation, from the fundamentals of playbook design to getting under the hood and extending and adapting Ansible to solve new automation challenges.

Who is this book for?

If you are an Ansible developer or operator who has a detailed understanding of its core elements and applications but are now looking to enhance your skills in applying automation using Ansible, this book is for you. Prior experience working with core system administration tasks on Linux and basic familiarity with concepts such as cloud computing, containers, network devices, and fundamentals of a high-level programming language will help you make the most of this book.

What you will learn

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of how Ansible works under the hood
  • Get to grips with Ansible collections and how they are changing and shaping the future of Ansible
  • Fully automate the Ansible playbook executions with encrypted data
  • Use blocks to construct failure recovery or cleanup
  • Explore the playbook debugger and Ansible console
  • Troubleshoot unexpected behavior effectively
  • Work with cloud infrastructure providers and container systems

This is a great book, but it's NOT for Ansible/DevOps beginners. It assumes you already know and understand Ansible, and is written for those who want to take Ansible to the next level.I really enjoyed this book, because the writing is straightforward, no-nonsense, gets right down to business, and is very much tailored to a developer's mindset (that's me).NOTE: While not *necessary*, the ideal reader of this book knows Python 3, as several chapters dive deeply into Ansible's internal Python code (ex: the chapters on Debugging and writing Plugins/Roles/etc.). The chapter on Jinja2 templates will also appeal (and make the most sense) to someone with a coding background.Much of the book, beyond Python and Jinja2, focuses on how Ansible executes plays/tasks/etc., and offers countless tips/best practices/gotchas oriented towards complex procedural/imperative scenarios you might face in managing real infrastructure complexities. This is a fairly stark contrast to the declarative focus you'll find in more introductory Ansible books/tutorials (again, appealing to someone with a coding background, imho). My only real complaint about this book is that it falls short on providing meaningful real-world example material. There are tons of detailed code samples and screenshots throughout the book (and I'll overlook a few typos in the code), BUT they're almost all what I'd call the 'academic' variety (isolated hypothetical scenarios to show how to use the various Ansible features being explained, disconnected from any larger real-world environment or context). The last few chapters provide some slightly more complex "zero downtime deployment" examples, but the book would be much stronger if the authors had built up a set of examples around a realistic cloud app environment (i.e. a multi-tier or microservices architecture, with test/stage/prod environments, etc.). The experienced Ansible user this book targets will be able to imagine how the book's simple examples can be applied to their own complex needs, but the book would have benefited from offering more on this front.Final word: This is a great book for a serious Ansible developer who wants to take their skills to the next level. It offers plenty of value for anyone learning Ansible, but it IS NOT the first book you should read if you're just starting out.

Excellent book, explaining in easy to understand terms the finer points of Ansible, so you can actually use it for big projects. The author was able to use simple examples to illustrate complex notions, very much appreciated.

Does a great job of documenting all of the precedence rules. Provides detailed examples on most topics. Great reference. To the author: in the next edition, consider how you might leverage the various building blocks in Ansible at an architectural level or the reasons why one would organize an inventory or playbook a given way. There is nothing out there thaat really provides use-case to solution mapping to help the advanced user understand how to wield Ansible as a component of their full CI/CD pipeline.

This is a well written book and simply explains concepts I used to believe were complex and hard to understand. I would have loved to have been given the soft copy of this book though.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
