Key benefits

  • Find out how to add enterprise features to a Kubernetes cluster with theory and exercises to guide you
  • Understand advanced topics including load balancing, externalDNS, IDP integration, security, auditing, backup, and CI/CD
  • Create development clusters for unique testing requirements, including running multiple clusters on a single server to simulate an enterprise environment

Description

Containerization has changed the DevOps game completely, with Docker and Kubernetes playing important roles in altering the flow of app creation and deployment. This book will help you acquire the knowledge and tools required to integrate Kubernetes clusters in an enterprise environment. The book begins by introducing you to Docker and Kubernetes fundamentals, including a review of basic Kubernetes objects. You’ll then get to grips with containerization and understand its core functionalities, including how to create ephemeral multinode clusters using kind. As you make progress, you’ll learn about cluster architecture, Kubernetes cluster deployment, and cluster management, and get started with application deployment. Moving on, you’ll find out how to integrate your container to a cloud platform and integrate tools including MetalLB, externalDNS, OpenID connect (OIDC), pod security policies (PSPs), Open Policy Agent (OPA), Falco, and Velero. Finally, you will discover how to deploy an entire platform to the cloud using continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD). By the end of this Kubernetes book, you will have learned how to create development clusters for testing applications and Kubernetes components, and be able to secure and audit a cluster by implementing various open-source solutions including OpenUnison, OPA, Falco, Kibana, and Velero.

Who is this book for?

This book is for anyone interested in DevOps, containerization, and going beyond basic Kubernetes cluster deployments. DevOps engineers, developers, and system administrators looking to enhance their IT career paths will also find this book helpful. Although some prior experience with Docker and Kubernetes is recommended, this book includes a Kubernetes bootcamp that provides a description of Kubernetes objects to help you if you are new to the topic or need a refresher.

What you will learn

  • Create a multinode Kubernetes cluster using kind
  • Implement Ingress, MetalLB, and ExternalDNS
  • Configure a cluster OIDC using impersonation
  • Map enterprise authorization to Kubernetes
  • Secure clusters using PSPs and OPA
  • Enhance auditing using Falco and EFK
  • Back up your workload for disaster recovery and cluster migration
  • Deploy to a platform using Tekton, GitLab, and ArgoCD

Unique format for a book, they have hands-on exercises mixed in with the reading, which makes the chapters fun to go through while reinforcing the chapter topics. I like this style of technical book and wish more would adopt a similar flow. The book does go into the Enterprise world, detailing topics like using JWT's for authentication, Impersonation, Auditing, and even metallb with a full dynamic DNS! Can you find these topics elsewhere? You could, if you wanted to browse dozens of blogs that include a 10,000 foot overview. Why do that when its all in a single book, with the same views to bring them all together. I recommend this book to anyone in the K8s world.

There are no shortages of Kubernetes books on the market today, it's the hot technology in today's world, which makes for a big job market. Based on experience, from trying to hire people for our Kubernetes team, there is a small pool of people who know how to integrate a Kubernetes cluster with external systems. Topics in this book directly map to and answer 80% of the interview questions we ask potential candidates. Nobody that we have interviewed has been able to answer more than 50% of the questions we ask. Questions like what is an aggregated role in Kubernetes always lead to blank stares. Even that's covered in the book. The fact that the book contains so many answers to so many of our interview questions makes it one of my favorite Kubernetes books on the market.

This book covers most of the topics when an enterprise would like to adopt Kubernetes. What’s more, you hardly can find a coverage on these topics in the market!I love the layout this book - it has 3 sections. Firstly, it starts with docker - the fundamental of the Kubernetes. Then, a boot camp and how to get a handy KinD to get hand on experience. Finally, the best part of the book - Running Kubernetes in enterprise. Also, I would recommend read this book more than one time. Personally, I will get something new when reading it again!I am sure the book definitely will bring you to another level understanding of Kubernetes and give you the best of your money :)

Really does cover Kubernetes in the enterprise well, going over topics and tools that aren't covered in other books.

An EXCELLENT Enterprise grade Kubernetes book! Must Read and Strongly Recommend it. It will help you understand how to INTEGRATE Kubernetes with your existing Enterprise systems, e.g. Authentication/Authorization with Microsoft Active Directory, Logging/Observability with Splunk/Elasticsearch/Fluentd, Security Compliance/Auditing with Sysdig Falco, RBAC, OIDC, OPA, PodSecurityPolicies, Networking with DNS, Layer 4/7 LB, Backup and Restore with VMware/Heptio Velero/ARK, CI/CD GitOps pipeline with GitLab, Tekton, ArgoCD, OpenUnison, build a DEV env with KIND and Deploy Apps with Helm !A lot of detail steps/yaml/code samples to help you setup, install, configure and test ALL these above important Enterprise Add-On critical to onboard Kubernetes platform while meeting the strict Enterprise Grade requirements in Security, ID Federation, Compliance, Auditing, Business Continuity Plan (BCP), High Availability, CI/CD, GitOps !3 sections:1/ Chap 1-3: Docker and Container Essentials – basics and you can skip if you know it already2/ Chap 4-6: k8s Dev clusters with KIND and k8s basic objects and services. KIND is better than mini-kube, so try it if you are not familiar with KIND!3/ Chap 7-END: VERY IMPORTANT. Try to read carefully and setup ALL of these important Add-ons to “ENTERPRISE GRADE” your k8s env! I have CKA and read/write many of these in the past few years. Great to see them GET ORGANIZED ALL in this GREAT book. I learn a lot NEW add-ons/tools in this section. There are many great tools, e.g. audit2rbac, Sysdig kube-psp-advisor, etc... The MOST IMPORTANT and DIFFICULT is the INTEGRATION with your EXISTING ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS! This section is SURE a good HELP!The only suggestion is on p.118 - newer k8s , e.g. v. 1.20 latest does not create pod/deploy/job per --restart option as in older k8s v.1.17 !

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
