IoT from Scratch provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in the Internet Of Things. Not a book that you’re going to sit down and read from cover to cover in a weekend (or a week), it’s crammed full of examples, theory, and just about anything else you’re going to need to understand how the IoT works. The beginner will be happy to see the wiring diagrams and extensive explanations of how sensors and Arduino-based microcontrollers work while those with more experience can derive value from the architectural and implementation discussions. Middleware like MQTT brokers is explained in the context of using the Internet and mobile technologies to manage and report on device status. Coverage tends towards AWS / Azure and Arduino, though Raspberry Pi projects are also presented. If you’re strictly interested in Raspberry-based IOT, you may need to take this book as more of a reference than a tutorial, but both Pi and Arduino users can learn from the material presented here.
Gondosubroto does an admirable job of making this book as readable as possible. It’s logically-written and flows well from topic to topic and chapter to chapter. The diagrams are clear and helpful. Each chapter contains information as to what will be covered and what requirements exist for those who want to try the exercises on their own. All in all, IoT from Scratch gives you exactly what the title says: everything you need to understand how SoCs interface with the Internet and a variety of sensors.

I highly recommend Gondosubroto‘s book “Internet of Things from Scratch” for anyone involved in developing IoT projects regardless of industry application. This comprehensive guide explores the core architecture and provides use-case applications. The book begins with a great overview of the IoT fundamentals, and then jumps into designing IoT networks, along with the communications and connectivity technology. It provides a level of detail to satisfy entry-level engineers to seasoned IoT developers providing an understandable level of detail required to build your own IoT application.

This book is an excellent guide to getting started with IOT. One of the real values is that it not only covers the device side of things, it also covers the cloud server side. It primarily focuses on AWS, with some coverage of other cloud platforms. It introduces all the various considerations in an IOT ecosystem, including security. That includes evaluating device and communication network features and capabilities for various criteria. It does a good job of introducing the myriad of AWS services. Just sifting through the bewildering array of services can be a roadblock to progress. This book helps cut through that.It proves a number of practical hands-on examples for exploring the technologies and capabilities. These are mostly based on ESP32 with Arduino IDE, with some use of Raspberry Pi. ESP32 is a great device platform because of its integrated communications capability and software support. The Arduino IDE means you get something running quickly. As with similar books, and typical for the Arduino ecosystem, these rely heavily on existing libraries and a companion code repo, so the projects are largely a matter of integrating those components. It’s interesting to see how many libraries exist to support IOT-related technologies, including things like communication protocols and cloud interactions. That makes the book an excellent resource for prototyping, proof-of-concept, one-off, and hobbyist projects. The projects cover full end-to-end, from device sensor interaction and communications with cloud services, to data monitoring and analytics with those services. As is also typical of similar books, this one doesn’t delve deeply into any one topic (there are too many), but it provides enough of a start to familiarize the reader with them to guide further study. It’s suitable for beginners as well as those with IOT experience. It doesn’t provide much background on embedded systems in general, so a little experience with embedded system breadboarding would be helpful, but isn’t required.I’m going to use it to build a sump-pump monitor for my home basement that will notify me via smartphone as an example.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
