Key benefits

  • Learn Azure Bicep from an official Microsoft trainer
  • Master the authoring experience to make your Infrastructure as Code journey seamless
  • Go beyond writing good templates with the help of advanced tips and tricks

Description

It’s no secret that developers don’t like using JSON files to declare their resources in Azure because of issues such as parameter duplication and not being able to use comments in templates. Azure Bicep helps resolve these issues, and this book will guide you, as a developer or DevOps engineer, to get the most out of the Bicep language. The book takes you on a journey from understanding Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates and what their drawbacks are to how you can use Bicep to overcome them. You will get familiar with tools such as Visual Studio Code, the Bicep extension, the Azure CLI, PowerShell, Azure DevOps, and GitHub for writing reusable, maintainable templates. After that, you’ll test the templates and deploy them to an Azure environment either from your own system or via a continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline. The book features a detailed overview of all the Bicep features, when to use what, and how to write great templates that fit well into your existing pipelines or in a new one. The chapters progress from easy to advanced topics and every effort has been put into making them easy to follow with examples, all of which are accessible via GitHub. By the end of this book, you’ll have developed a solid understanding of Azure Bicep and will be able to create, test, and deploy your resources locally or in your CI/CD pipelines.

Who is this book for?

This book is for cloud engineers, developers, and DevOps engineers who are responsible for writing templates to deploy resources in Microsoft Azure and contributing to CI/CD pipelines. Professionals who want to get started with DevOps and Infrastructure as Code when it comes to working with Microsoft Azure will also benefit from reading this book. Readers are expected to have a basic understanding of CI/CD concepts, must have worked with ARM templates to deploy resources to Azure, and must have used or be familiar with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions for their CI/CD pipelines.

What you will learn

  • Get started with Azure Bicep and install the necessary tools
  • Understand the details of how to define resources with Bicep
  • Use modules to create templates for different teams in your company
  • Optimize templates using expressions, conditions, and loops
  • Make customizable templates using parameters, variables, and functions
  • Deploy templates locally or from Azure DevOps or GitHub
  • Stay on top of your IaC with best practices and industry standards

Really happy that I purchased this book! As it turns out, it is really a wonderful resource for learning Bicep language. Yas slowly builds up your Bicep knowledge, step by step, page by page, and once you're finished with the book, you have very good understanding of why Bicep was created, how to use it in your projects and where it fits best. There are also numerous best practices, hints on dealing with your code, introducing Azure DevOps and GitHub actions into your workflows and much more! In my opinion - worth reading!

Azure Bicep is hot!If you’ve ever worked with ARM Templates, you know it’s hard to learn the JSON language, (the current ARM Template syntax) and write complex templates. After years of manipulating ARM templates, Microsoft has come up with a more than decent alternative: A domain specific language (DSL) called Bicep, that allows its users to automate Infrastructure As Code (IAC) deployments. In this book you will find a lot of practical advice and examples. After reading this book, you will have a solid foundation for planning your own automated deployment process for Azure. The author Yaser Adel Mehraban, has taken his experience and combined a tutorial of the Bicep language with a lot of reference material, best practices and industry standards. The book is structured very well and offers the reader a manageable learning path to get started. Each chapter gives the reader's a good understanding of Bicep and gives an answer to a lot of the typical questions that one has when working in an development (and IAC) context. In section 1: Getting Started with Azure Bicep, you will find following topics:An Introduction to Azure BicepInstalling Azure BicepAuthoring ExperienceCompiling and Decompiling Bicep FilesIn section 2: Azure Bicep Core Concepts, you will find following topics:Defining ResourcesUsing Parameters, Variables, and Template FunctionsUnderstanding Expressions, Symbolic Names, Conditions, and LoopsDefining Modules and Utilizing OutputsIn section 3: Deploying Azure Bicep Templates, you will find following topics:Deploying a Local TemplateDeploying Bicep Using Azure DevOpsDeploying Bicep Templates Using GitHub ActionsExploring Best Practices for Future MaintenanceSimply put, this is the must-have book for anyone who is involved into Infrastructure as Code with Azure Bicep!

The book is a well-defined map to all those seeking to delve into the world of Infrastructure as Code with Azure Bicep. The Chapters are well defined milestones that leaves you satisfied and accomplished with its wealth of knowledge, as well as thirsty for what is to come next. With easy-to-understand definitions and instructions, as well as code snippets to guide you along. Also provided are the very much appreciated links to the GitHub repository.Starting from the basics, it gives a detailed introduction as to what Azure Bicep is; the shortcomings of ARM templates and how Azure Bicep addresses them. The book also lays a clear roadmap on how to get the necessary tools setup on your environment of choice and provides a comprehensive dissection into the structure of Azure Bicep. This would include what I would deem as one of the most interesting part - dealing with iterations within a resource, as well as using expressions. Which showcases the power and versatility of Azure Bicep. The book also provides hands on instructions on how to deploy your infrastructure using Azure DevOps Services and, GitHub. Finally, to top it off you are left with a set of guidelines and best practices to guide you along.Overall, the experience this book has provided has been an enriching one. It is well written, making very good use of language to craft the technicality into something that someone new to the field will understand. I would wholeheartedly recommend.

I always love books that get to the point. We unfortunately only have 24 hours in a day, so setting the stage and getting to the point are two things I look for in training material. Infrastructure as code is also a hot topic, but prior to Bicep, a lot of us infrastructure folks struggled to build out infrastructure programmatically. Not coming from a dev background, ARM Templates were a bit unwieldy to me. Sure I got the hang of it eventually, but I would've loved the Bicep domain specific language even better had it existed when I first started building out Azure infrastructure 8 years ago. This book does a great example at getting to the point and setting the reader up for success with building out infrastructure using Bicep. The reader will learn about why Bicep was created and gain some foundational knowledge, then the reader will learn how to install Azure Bicep, from there the reader will dig into core concepts of the templates (parameters, variables, template functions, etc.), as well as Yaser even goes into how to decompile ARM Templates (which is always a bit tricky if you've never done this before). All in all, this is a great primer and how-to with getting started using the Bicep language. I hope more folks start embracing tooling like Bicep as it really does make infrastructure as code easier to manage and manipulate. Great book!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release.
