As a professional who has managed a team of geospatial analysts and developers, I have a good understanding of the concepts and techniques utilized, albeit from years ago when utilizing the cloud was cutting edge. This book is very well written, easy to follow, and the early chapters help build a framework of understanding by going through some of the basics of cloud computing and benefits of geospatial data in the cloud. As you progress through the chapters to the more complex topics, the detailed explanations, screen shots, along with real-world examples, make it easy for readers to understand, quickly get up to speed, and utilize the knowledge effectively. It is a refreshing blend of both theory and real-world implementation, making it a great resource that you will want to keep within arm’s reach.I highly recommend this book for beginners learning how to build geospatial solutions on AWS to seasoned professionals looking to dust off or refresh antiquated techniques that were once bleeding edge.

Two themes kept coming to mind as I read this. First, all data is geospatial data (meaning there are geospatial aspects for every datum). Second, working with geospatial data used to be really hard but these guys make it simple and straight forward. The book is very practical. It goes step by step, teaching the reader how to do standard analytics using AWS. There are lots of useful screen shots, making it easy to follow along. The book is based on AWS services and describes the relevant services throughout. My favorite part of the book is the architectural considerations they include at the end of every chapter. These highlight concepts from the AWS well architected framework like security, cost optimization, and resiliency. The book focuses more on AWS tools than specific algos of methods for geospatial processing. This book is about running geospatial analytics systems, not about developing geospatial ML projects. So I found myself wanting more on the analytics mathy side. Alas, there is another book about geospatial analytics with python from packt that likely covers this. I was pleasantly surprised that they covered R and Hadoop (called AWS EMR). These two frameworks are still widely used for geospatial analysis and it is great to see how existing methods can be deployed on AWS.Overall, this is the companion book for anyone building geospatial solutions on AWS. Follow its steps and you will end up in the right place.
