Key benefits

  • Use Spring Boot 3 to create powerful, complex, and secure backends for your applications
  • Leverage React to build slick, high-performance frontends
  • Get introduced to TypeScript, Vite, and React Query for React development

Description

If you’re an existing Java developer who wants to go full stack or pick up another frontend framework, this book is your concise introduction to React. In this three-part build-along, you’ll create a robust Spring Boot backend, a React frontend, and then deploy them together. This new edition is updated to Spring Boot 3 and includes expanded content on security and testing. For the first time ever, it also covers React development with the in-demand TypeScript. You’ll explore the elements that go into creating a REST API and testing, securing, and deploying your applications. You’ll learn about custom Hooks, third-party components, and MUI. By the end of this book, you'll be able to build a full stack application using the latest tools and modern best practices.

Who is this book for?

This book is for Java developers who have basic familiarity with Spring Boot but don’t know where to start when it comes to building full stack applications. Basic knowledge of JavaScript and HTML will help you to follow along. You'll also find this book useful if you're a frontend developer with knowledge of JavaScript basics and looking to learn full stack development, or a full stack developer experienced in other technology stacks looking to learn a new one.

What you will learn

  • Make fast and RESTful web services powered by Spring Data REST
  • Create and manage databases using ORM, JPA, Hibernate, and more
  • Explore the use of unit tests and JWTs with Spring Security
  • Employ React Hooks, props, states, and more to create your frontend
  • Harness the Material UI component library to customize your frontend
  • Use the fetch API, Axios, and React Query for networking
  • Add CRUD functionality to your apps
  • Deploy your apps using AWS and Docker

The book has 20 chapters which can be completed in a months time to give you the skills to become a full stack developer or pick up another frontend framework. The book has 3 parts,- Part 1 covers Backend Programming with Spring Boot, starting with setting up the environment, touching on the salient features of the Spring eco-system, developing & testing REST APIs for the backend.- Part 2 covers Frontend Programming with React, starting with setting up the environment, touching on typescript and diving into React and building the UI using custom Hooks, 3rd party components and MUI. React apps are made out of components. The book covers how React components are JavaScript functions that return markup and help build scalable apps. The book covers the markup syntax used in React - JSX.- Part 3 covers Integrating the frontend with the backend, securing the frontend & backend, deploying the backend to AWS & frontend to Netlify, explores containerization options.

"I have read the previous versions of this book, and I must say that it is one of the best resources I have found. In this fourth edition, the book walks you through the creation of a complete application, from initial setup to deployment. A standout feature is the addition of TypeScript, which is a valuable addition for developers looking for a modern approach. The book focuses on using Spring Boot 3 to build robust and secure backends, and React to develop high-performance frontends. Concepts such as Vite and React Query for React development are also introduced.Topics include creating a REST API, database management with JPA and Hibernate, unit testing with Spring Security, and creating frontend components with React. In addition, the use of the Material UI component library to customize the user interface is explored.Overall, this book is ideal for Java developers who want to get into full stack development or explore a new frontend framework. It is also useful for frontend developers with basic JavaScript skills who want to learn full stack development, as well as for experienced developers in other technologies looking to expand their skills. The book is organized in a coherent manner, covering everything from environment setup to application deployment. It provides an excellent foundation for those who want to build modern applications using Java, React, and TypeScript."

The book builds a real world application, starting at the backend with Java and Spring and finishes of with the frontend with React which is then deployed.Very thorough ground up tutorial, which doesn’t make too many assumptions about your current knowledge.Goes through everything in detail, even down to the imports and dependencies which can be guess work in many tutorials. The application is built up in a step by step process so you can see the functionality as it is built in, with more advanced features such as security and swagger added on later. With further reading to take some aspects of the application to a production standard. The front-end section of of the book is almost a full React tutorial... everything you would need to know to become a competent React developer. Again the code is built up gradually in a carefully thought out process. The demo application is linked together and then deployed so you actually have the feel of creating something real. You could almost adapt the code to build whatever you want and you would have a ready made deployed application. This is another great edition to the previous books and ideal for anyone who is starting out and wants to get a flavour of what is required in a professional application. Equally, it is very useful for backend or frontend developers who want to venture into the full-stack world.I thoroughly recommend this book.

This book is a great starting point for those who have some experience with the Spring framework, understand dependency injection, and have some familiarity with a JavaScript. It does cover the basics of building a CRUD application clearly, and it does help to see the power of Spring Boot and the newer React features. You will learn about Web Tokens and Spring Security, which are important topics for building secure applications. This book is perfect for stepping to full-stack development with Spring Boot and React. It moves quickly over key topics, allowing readers to write their own demo app and build further interest in React and Spring Boot.Overall, this book is a great starting point for anyone looking to learn full-stack development with Spring Boot and React. It’s concise, easy to follow, and covers all the essential topics needed to get started.

Seeking to improve my Full Stack Development skills, I turned to this book for a React perspective, and it delivered beyond expectations. The author's well-structured content provides a practical journey through creating and deploying full-stack applications on the cloud. The book covers Java with Spring Boot essentials, including dependency injection, JPA for databases, RESTful API design, security, and testing. As someone with prior React experience, I found the explanations of React features, especially regarding lists, events, and forms, to be clear and enjoyable. The introduction to TypeScript integration with React was particularly helpful.A noteworthy aspect of the book is its practical focus on tools and technologies. It covers creating a React app with Vite and effectively using Axios for network calls. The final chapter, dedicated to deploying applications, offers step-by-step guidance on AWS for backend and database deployment, Netlify for frontend deployment, and Docker containers.I recommend this book to developers looking to explore full-stack development with Spring Boot and React. Whether you're familiar with Java or new to React, the book's hands-on approach provides valuable insights, making it an essential resource for navigating modern web development challenges.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.
