I recommend this book for IT professionals working in enterprise environments, and hackers/hobbyists that want a reference and deeper understanding of commands. This book is applicable to people of all skill levels and will continue to provide value as skillset grows, even for more experienced users.I’ve found dozens of instances in this book where I said to myself “That’s awesome, I’m gonna have to use that, very useful.”As someone that likes Debian based distros, it’s nice to see this book references Red Hat derivatives which I tend to see more of in enterprise environments.A huge bonus of this book is the section on creating VMware virtual machines, I was surprised at the time the author took to explain controller and disk types. The section on security and SELinux provides an excellent reference to ABRT variables and securing SSH. There is even a section on Cryptography and deploying cloud instances in AWS.The thing I like most about this book is it provides me in depth use cases for commands I already know or use regularly, which strengthens my foundation and confidence. This book will make you a better System Administrator and improve the security of your systems.

Essential Linux Commands is my new go to book when it comes to the Linux command line. The book does a very good job of providing the reader with a knowledgeable grasp of the Linux Commands identified in the book. Essential Linux Commands is a book for everyone, beginners, experts and everyone in between. I have over 20 years of experience with the Linux command line and there were best practices and techniques that I learned from this book. This book is also great for beginners, I lent Essential Linux Commands to a cyber security student and it was the perfect supplement to her studies. One thing that really stands out about the book is the that it goes beyond the usual Linux topics and delves into topics like cloud computing, security, logging and networking. Overall I highly recommend Essential Linux Commands if you work in a Linux environment, are a student or if you just want to gain more knowledge about Linux commands.

This book covers server installations, disk management, file permissions, and network security. It provides practical steps for setting up a CentOS server, explains commands like fdisk, chmod, mount, cat, grep, top, and iptables, and explores cloud integration with AWS. Having personally followed the book's instructions to set up a CentOS server and use various commands, I found the hands-on exercises immensely valuable. While it offers clear explanations and practical examples, making it an excellent resource for system administrators, developers, IT professionals, students, and Linux enthusiasts, its content is more suited for beginners and may lack depth for advanced users seeking more comprehensive techniques. The book is structured to build foundational knowledge, ensuring that readers can manage Linux systems effectively and confidently.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
