Key benefits

  • Get to grips with Hooks' design and understand each built-in Hook's pitfalls with examples
  • Discover how to turn your existing code into a reusable Hook via code refactoring
  • Explore design solutions to identify and solve site performance issues involving Hooks

Description

React hook creates a unique solution for using states in function components to orchestrate UI communication. They provide you with an easy interface to write custom data management solutions with low development and maintenance costs. Understanding how Hooks are designed enables you to use them more effectively, and this book helps you to do just that. This book starts with a custom-crafted solution to reveal why Hooks are needed in the first place. You will learn about the React engine and discover how each built-in Hook can manage a persistent value by hooking into it. You will walk through the design and implementation of each hook with code so that you gain a solid understanding. Finally, you'll get to grips with each Hook's pitfalls and find out how to effectively overcome them. By the end of this React book, you'll have gained the confidence to build and write Hooks for developing functional and efficient web applications at scale.

Who is this book for?

This book is for web developers who are looking for a consistent and efficient approach for applying application states with Hooks. Basic knowledge of React will help you to get the most out of this book.

What you will learn

  • Create your own hooks to suit your state management requirement
  • Detect the current window size of your website using useEffect
  • Debounce an action to improve user interface (UI) performance using useMemo
  • Establish a global site configuration using useContext
  • Avoid hard-to-find application memory leaks using useRef
  • Design a simple and effective API data layer using custom Hooks

I recently started working with React again and this book provided a great refresher. It starts by providing a deep dive into the absolute basics of functional components and State, which I defiantly needed! I would highly recommend this book for beginners learning react. The code examples are easy to understand and allowed me to better visual how to create and use these hooks. The book then expands on data structure and usage of each hook in detail. I defiantly love all of the examples within the code as I am a visual learning, making this book very easy to read and understand all the concepts.

I have recently started working on a React project, and working with React hooks is something new for me. This book begins with a deep dive into the absolute basics of functional components and State. Then goes on to explain the data structure and usage of each hook in detail.Overall the book and the source code it provides are well written. Very helpful for me to understand the usability of each hook. I would highly recommend this book for beginners trying to learn functional components and hooks.I was not too impressed by creating a custom hook section, I think it left out a lot of performance optimization details but if you are a beginner, its a good starting point.

This is a weird book, and not at all what I expected. The content definitely doesn't fit the title. My TL;DR - don't buy it unless you're AT LEAST intermediate with React + Hooks already. It's got some actual legitimate value, but I give it just 2 stars due to a lot of technical errors in the code (bad tech editor), for often being confusing in the writing itself, and for constantly bouncing between treating the reader like a total noob, then like a pro, then like a noob again. The first couple chapters are written as if the reader is brand new to React, and has never done much actual JS coding before. In chapter 1 the author covers a brief history of web JS frameworks (jQuery, Angular, and React), then quickly explains the absolute basics of React (the typical "Hello World" example of rendering <App/> to a DOM node, explaining what a Function Component is, etc.).In chapter 2 he explains the absolute basics of "State" as a concept, and a few contrived examples of trying to create and maintain state in JS functions (using generic objects as a cache on the window object - that basic). So at that point I'm thinking this is a book for total beginners. Oh well, ok that's fine... BUT THEN... in chapter 3 he introduces Hooks - but instead of easing in with some really basic examples of why you need them, how the syntax works, etc. (as a typical beginner book would), the author dives right into the _deep_ end. He jump right into how Hooks are implemented _within_ React itself (under the hood). He starts talking about the data structures React uses to store hooks, manage rendering, etc. (touching on "Fibers", linked lists, and other internals). Honestly, I hate to be harsh but he kinda sucks at it. Despite his best efforts (including various diagrams, flow charts, and snippets of code that apparently come from React itself), overall his explanation is just a mess. I've been doing React for years, and I found it confusing and incomplete (at best). For a newbie? I mean, WTF?! Forget about it.Chapters 4-8 cover what _he_ clearly considers to be the only hooks you really need to know (useState, useEffect, useMemo, useContext, and useRef – Those are all important, but I don't get why he didn't even touch on useCallback, or a few more). For each chapter the pattern is the same - he starts out way too technical, again _starting_ by _trying_ to explain how each is implemented _within_ React (with more diagrams, internal code snippets, etc.). My problem with this is that none of the code or logic he explains is even accessible from _your_ JS executing within React at runtime, so these internal details are all just confusing and pointless to the average developer. On the other hand, if you actually wanted to contribute to the Github React codebase itself, these partial explanations wouldn't even be enough to get you started (i.e. way too basic and incomplete to actually be useful for an advanced developer). After that beginning mess (in each chapter, 4-8), I must say that each chapter _does_ do a nice job, FINALLY, of actually explaining how those 5 main hooks actually work at runtime, and how you can use them in you actual code (with a few decent code examples in each chapter).Chapter 9 is the _only_ chapter in the book that sorta matches what the Title suggests ("Designing Hooks"). He briefly explains 7 simple custom hook examples (i.e. hooks that you could "design" yourself), with sample code and tips/gotchas for each one.To wrap it up, chapter 10 is back to being written for complete noobs again. It's barely even about React - mostly just covering ES6 syntax and various other basics any beginner React developer probably already knows (and certainly anyone would know if they cared how Hooks are implemented in the React engine itself). One more thing this book _does_ do well - if you can handle the schizophrenic bipolar bounces from noob-to-pro-to-noob along the way ... he really does explain some pro-level tips for performance optimizations, and tips/tricks/gotchas. These were great, and as a pro React dev I found them the only real value for me in this book (cuz the React engine stuff was, again, incomplete at best, and I'm not about to go submitting Github PR's to the Hooks team).Final word: I'd give this book 4 star for the pro tips alone - but I struck 1 star due mostly to the egregious technical editing mistakes (not a _ton_ of code errors, but too many to ignore, and when they come up they're inexcusably obvious, imho), and 1 star due to the overall mess of going from noob to pro (and being actually a little too poorly written and confusing in general, throughout).I expect the 2nd Edition of this book to be better - but since it just printed (now, 2022), that's not coming for a while. Oh well.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.
