Updating data

In this recipe, you will learn how to update data in a table in Hive.

Updating data in a Hive table is the traditional way of updating data in a table in any RDBMS. Updating data in a table can only be performed if the table supports Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability (ACID) properties. The general format of updating data in a table is as follows:

UPDATE tablename SET column = value [, column = value ...] [WHERE expression]

Where:

  • tablename: This is the name of the table

  • values_row: This is the value that is to be inserted into the table.

  • WHERE expression: This is an optional clause. Only rows that match the WHERE clause will be updated

Getting ready

This recipe requires having Hive installed as described in the Installing Hive recipe of Chapter 1, Developing Hive. You will also need the Hive CLI or Beeline client to run the commands.

This recipe requires transactions enabled, so refer to Enabling transactions in Hive in Hive for that.
