I like this book because it provides a guide to understanding and applying best practices to any Linux system. It shows how and why we do things a certain way, and when to consider breaking the rules. There are command references online everywhere that are constantly updated, this doesn't attempt to pointlessly cover that ground again. The analogies work great to put difficult concepts into perspective. I would recommend this not just to Linux administrators, but any administrator as these concepts are almost entirely universal. It's good for IT professionals at any level, including those looking to understand how to hire administrators and how to look at their thought processes.

I am more than half way done with the book so far and love it. Some of the topics seemed very intimating to me. However the way it's explained makes it much easier to understand.I am still a long way from being confident in my Linix administration skills, but I plan to finish this book and re-read it in a couple of months again.The author gives real world examples to explain complex topics. It makes it relatable for me. I highly recommend this for anyone who is, or wants to be, a Linux admin.

This book is a tool that should be in every IT SA’s library. It is a wealth of information. Because of the many ways that people visualize what an IT SA is and what he does, the author attacks that topic quickly because that determines where we go from there. The SA’s environment is so critical but so varied in today’s business world.The structure of the book is straight forward and well designed permitting the reader quick access to the different topics he wants to glean insight.I found the author’s writing technique refreshing. It is easy to follow his thoughts. His metaphors help you to understand and picture his thoughts/logic.

I really like this book because it gave me a great starting point at understanding the system administrator role (or “hat” as the author says) and how it relates to the business, what kinds of tasks and concerns I should be expecting from my system administration team as a business owner, how they should be thinking about their job, and how they should be interacting with me and the rest of the business. I know have a far better understanding of concepts at use every day in my environment such as why virtualization plays a critical role, why backups require so much discussion and planning, and why proactive maintenance and reboot schedules and such function. I like that I am able to get analogies that help me to understand not just how things work but also how their function could affect the larger business. Very much recommended.
