Key benefits

  • Build full-stack applications with modern APIs using GraphQL and React Hooks
  • Integrate Apollo into React and build frontend components using GraphQL
  • Implement a self-updating notification pop-up with a unique GraphQL feature called Subscriptions

Description

React and GraphQL, when combined, provide you with a very dynamic, efficient, and stable tech stack to build web-based applications. GraphQL is a modern solution for querying an API that represents an alternative to REST and is the next evolution in web development. This book guides you in creating a full-stack web application from scratch using modern web technologies such as Apollo, Express.js, Node.js, and React. First, you’ll start by configuring and setting up your development environment. Next, the book demonstrates how to solve complex problems with GraphQL, such as abstracting multi-table database architectures and handling image uploads using Sequelize. You’ll then build a complete Graphbook from scratch. While doing so, you’ll cover the tricky parts of connecting React to the backend, and maintaining and synchronizing state. In addition to this, you’ll also learn how to write Reusable React components and use React Hooks. Later chapters will guide you through querying data and authenticating users in order to enable user privacy. Finally, you’ll explore how to deploy your application on AWS and ensure continuous deployment using Docker and CircleCI. By the end of this web development book, you'll have learned how to build and deploy scalable full-stack applications with ease using React and GraphQL.

Who is this book for?

This React GraphQL book is for web developers familiar with React and GraphQL who want to enhance their skills and build full-stack applications using industry standards like React, Apollo, Node.js, and SQL at scale while learning to solve complex problems with GraphQL.

What you will learn

  • Build a GraphQL API by implementing models and schemas with Apollo and Sequelize
  • Set up an Apollo Client and build frontend components using React
  • Write Reusable React components and use React Hooks
  • Authenticate and query user data using GraphQL
  • Use Mocha to write test cases for your full-stack application
  • Deploy your application to AWS using Docker and CircleCI

You can leave the lines you wrote above as well:This book is very helpful for elevating the existing tech stack. It offers in-depth knowledge of GraphQL with React library. From the installation of softwares to solving complex problems the book has everything, it also consists of practical examples which is the most important thing. Still in the process of reading it.

This is an excellent little step-by-step tutorial. If you want to learn how to use GraphQL and React you could definitely do worse. It is aimed at people with no previous experience, so depending on your skill level you may find yourself skipping over the early sections that cover how to install Node and use NPM. It does go into some decent detail later on though. I learned. The code is pretty up to date. Functional components are used with hooks for state. As with all practical coding books, it'll be out of date in five years, but right now it's grand. As with all Packt books it's well presented and will look sweet on your shelves. A nice soft blue cover with orange accents. It's well made and doesn't fall apart. If this is a stack you need to pick up, reading this book will definitely set you on your way.

This is a good book. As full-stack React tutorials go, it's one of the best I've read. I'd recommend you not take it on unless you're already an intermediate-or-better React and Node developer, as the material is pretty complex. The author does a pretty good job of explaining all the libraries in his stack for the uninitiated, but you'll be much better off if you're already at least somewhat comfortable with React 17, Node 14, Express, and MySQL at a minimum. He explains Apollo and GraphQL in pretty good detail, but if you already have some comfort with those as well you'll have an easier time. The book builds a single app throughout (as the coding example content), which is a minimal social network (a Twitter-lite, with posts, feeds, a basic DM feature, and user profiles, but no likes/follows/comments/etc.). It's complex enough to be a good example app, and the code is pretty complex to get it all built by the end (all ES6+).A lot of books like this just walk through the code step-by-step, without much deeper theory or actual learning content (do this, then do that, then do this next thing, etc.). This author did a pretty nice job of really trying to thoroughly explain how things work, and the logic and reasons for the various decisions of his implementation at each stage. It's not perfect (which is why I advise familiarity in advance), and in particular the chapters on JWT auth and SSR were pretty confusing, but those are advanced topics so I won't fault him too much (tho I do hope he works on explaining them in more/better detail in the 2nd edition, ahem). What I liked most about this book is that it _doesn't_ rely on a UI framework (I'm so sick of Material-UI books!). Rather, it's all raw HTML5 and CSS for the UI components. Given that, and the focus on MySQL and Sequelize (I'm also sick of Mongo/Mongoose tutorials!), this is a book that will help any serious React developer learn some new tricks, even if you don't plan to use GraphQL.I pulled 1 star from my rating because there are a few too many technical editing problems (bugs or code errors - a memory leak in particular in Chapter 5 due to a misunderstanding of how the JS .bind() method works). Also, the chapter on Testing feels like an afterthought thrown in near the end to check the box for his publisher (very thin, with just a few basic test examples). Testing should really be a topic included throughout the book. Testing the Apollo client integration and GraphQL API in particular are topics that deserves a lot more coverage (no pun intended).Final word: This book has its flaws, as any similar book does - but overall it's a good book that covers a lot of useful material beyond just what the cover suggests. I'd recommend it to any serious React developer.

Coming from the .Net world, my initial thoughts would be that I would struggle to study React with GraphQl. But once I got reading this book it really to the fear out of me. The book is written in very plain language which can easily be understood by a beginner who has no previous knowledge of development using React. The book is well structured and gives enough knowledge to get the development enviroment ready and also focuses on getting the tools set for debugging. Each chapter in this book focuses on a single technology.A very good book to get a full understanding of React, Node.js. GraphQL with Express.js and how these technologies can be integrated with each other.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
