This book explains and demonstrates how to use the Arduino IDE to program Internet of Things (IoT) with ESP32 low-cost, low-power system on a chip microcontrollers. The author expertly covers sensors, actuators, camera, displays, network protocols, database protocols, APIs, logging, and more. The examples in the book are practical and easy to follow. The book’s final chapter looks at Espressif’s IoT Development Framework (IDF) for ESP32, Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) and more. This is an excellent hands-on book!

This book is a fantastic introduction to IOT. It covers a number of important aspects for the device side in one place. ESP32 provides a variety of device capabilities, and the Arduino IDE makes a great laboratory for learning it all with minimal friction. One of the challenges in IOT is that it requires a wide range of skills: embedded systems programming, microcontrollers and RTOS’s, electronics and device interfacing, communications technologies and protocols, backend systems for data storage and monitoring, and a variety of software.I’ve worked in IOT for almost 10 years, with WiFi, BLE, cellular, MQTT, ESP32 and the ESP-IDF, and a variety of other microcontrollers and devices connected via UART, I2C, and SPI, and this book touches on all of those. You can use it to prototype real full-featured products. It provides introductory level background on each of the topics, including cloud tools (the other end of the IOT connection). There’s a lot of background that it doesn’t have room to cover, and full productization requires additional engineering discipline, but it provides enough information to get started. That gives you a practical platform for further learning. The book relies heavily on third-party hardware modules and libraries, including open-source resources. That’s typical for the Arduino ecosystem. Most of the examples and projects in the book are small, digestible integration efforts of these, with customization for the particular application. That provides an excellent platform for learning how to apply them in full product development. The results are suitable for prototype, hobby, or one-off builds. The code for the book is included in a GitHub repository. The book includes snippets from that and briefly explains what the code is doing.

I received a review copy of the book from the publisher. I have been a software developer for four decades and have developed software for the ESP32 for several years using more advanced tools than the Arduino IDE. I enjoyed reading the book and highly recommend it to beginners who want to gain practical experience with the Internet of Things. As the title suggests, it is very hands-on and will take the raw beginner to a far more advanced state step-by-step.The Arduino IDE has its limitations but offers a surprising amount of power, as the reader of this book will discover. It enables the student to dive into IoT concepts, practices, and tools without the steep learning curve of more sophisticated development environments and tools. That can come later. It is great for hobbyists. The projects in the book are both conceptual and practical and build on each other. The final chapter introduces the reader to the more advanced development environments and provides a roadmap for the aspiring IoT professional.

The book covers a range of topics and is aimed at the ESP32 and will get someone to speed using these chips. It's right to light on the various Bluetooth protocols in which a chapter could have been included, probably overpriced in relation to the number of pages and content.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.
