Key benefits

  • Identify common gotchas and antipatterns when developing TypeScript applications and understand how to avoid them
  • Discover expert techniques and best practices in developing large-scale TypeScript applications
  • Explore advanced design patterns taken from functional programming and reactive programming

Description

Design patterns are critical armor for every developer to build maintainable apps. TypeScript 4 Design Patterns and Best Practices is a one-stop guide to help you learn design patterns and practices to develop scalable TypeScript applications. It will also serve as handy documentation for future maintainers. This book takes a hands-on approach to help you get up and running with the implementation of TypeScript design patterns and associated methodologies for writing testable code. You'll start by exploring the practical aspects of TypeScript 4 and its new features. The book will then take you through the traditional gang of four (GOF) design patterns in their classic and alternative form and show you how to use them in real-world development projects. Once you've got to grips with traditional design patterns, you'll advance to learning about their functional programming and reactive programming counterparts and how to couple them to deliver better and more idiomatic TypeScript code. By the end of this TypeScript book, you'll be able to efficiently recognize when and how to use the right design patterns in any practical use case and gain the confidence to work on scalable and maintainable TypeScript projects of any size.

Who is this book for?

If you're a TypeScript developer looking to learn how to apply established design patterns to solve common programming problems instead of reinventing solutions, you'll find this book useful. You're not expected to have prior knowledge of design patterns. Basic TypeScript knowledge is all you need to get started with this book.

What you will learn

  • Understand the role of design patterns and their significance
  • Explore all significant design patterns within the context of TypeScript
  • Analyze, and develop classical design patterns in TypeScript
  • Find out how design patterns differ from design concepts
  • Understand how to put the principles of design patterns into practice
  • Discover additional patterns that stem from functional and reactive programming

I really like the approach taken in this book as it was very well structured and made sure not to overwhelm you with information too early on.Too many books these these also fail to provide good clear, real world examples and this book hit that nail on the head. It's not usual for a book to come with GitHub examples either so you code along, I really like that.I usually like to learn from free online resources but I can say for sure that my Typescript has improved after reading this book, worth every penny.

At the end of each chapter of the book, there’s a Q&A section which is quite useful to read to recap information within the chapter. The book goes through the basics of using Typescript in VS Code, this would help a beginner in starting to code in Typescript. Further reading sections at the end of each chapter allows a person to explore topics covered in the book even further. The inclusion of the GutHub repo where the code examples are stored helps to ensure fewer errors occur if you were to type out the code manually. With all of the design patterns in the book, you learn when to use them, how to test, criticisms of the design pattern in question, UML class diagrams and how to implement the design pattern, with both classic and real-world implementation examples included. You also get to see how the likes of SOLID principles can be applied within Typescript. The inclusion of anti-patterns is definitely a plus. Some books covering design patterns don’t include anti-patterns so it’s good to see and read about them here. The book is ideal for beginner and intermediate Typescript developers. Expert developers in Typescript could also use it to refresh and learn more about design patterns.

The author put together a very comprehensive collection of design patterns and took the time to introduce new comers to TypeScript 4. This books isn't simple a collection of patterns, but a rather nice guided tour through the topic at hand. But if you are an experienced developer, you can quickly jump to the topics that matter to you as the book is neatly divided by categories such as Creational and Structural, among several others.

In this book, the author describes effective programming practice for every programming task. The software used in this book is using VScode and typescript 4.2. So please use this book if you want to know about these technologies. The typescript files end with .ts just like javascript files end with .js. The similartity between typescript and java script ends there. Typescript 4 has different ways to declare variables and their types. This is described in chapter 1 “getting to know typescript”. Unified modeling Language (UML) is described in this chapter as a software architechting language as well as interaction between systems and deployment models. In chapter 2, Typescript core principles,Typescript core principles, working with advanced types, oop methods are discussed. A design pattern is a method to solve recurrent problems in software programming. In chapter 3 creational design patterns are discussed. singleton pattern, Creation pattern, builder pattern, factory pattern, abstract factory pattern are discussed. In chapter 4 structural design patterns are discussed. In chapter 5 behavioural design patterns are discussed. The strategy, iterator, mediator patterns are discussed. UML class diagram sfor each kind of desing are provided in the book for each chapter. In chapter 6 functional programming with typescript is discussed. In chapter 7 reactive programming with typescript is discussed. Modern and robust applications can be developed using the singleton and the iterator pattern. This is discussed with an example. SOLID principles for OOP design are described in this chapter as single reponsibility principle, open close principles, liskov substitution principle, interface segregation principle and dependency inversion principle are coined here. In chapter 9 antipattern principles are discussed.Overall,Excellent description for use of typescriptGreat content condensed in 10 chapters.can improve onDownload locations and paths. If you're familiar with design patterns, this book is the definitive reference to use them with TypeScript's flexible features in an idiomatic style. The guide is not just a translation of the Gang of Four Design Patterns book into equivalent object-oriented class-based TypeScript. Instead, the author uses features specific to TypeScript and its browser/Node.js/Deno targets to improve on classical patterns where appropriate. For example, the Singleton pattern is presented in a “classical” style (using classes/objects), using JS/TS module resolution (by exporting a new class instance as a variable), and using an IoC container with pros and cons presented for each.If you're new to design patterns or skeptical about their value, the book is an excellent introduction that may change your mind. Theo Despoudis is careful not to assume too much knowledge, providing short intros to running TypeScript in the browser and on the server. The language and examples don't feel academic or intimidating. Class diagrams help to present the patterns visually. Refreshingly, each pattern includes a summary of where you should look to use it and where it can be found in the wild. The author also talks about downsides so you know when not to use each pattern and what to consider instead.Theo is pragmatic about patterns and doesn't consider them a cure-all. It was good to find an admission that patterns won't “magically make programs better”. The author also recognises that patterns must adapt as business needs change, and is an advocate for not letting a codebase calcify around the wrong pattern. This is a healthy philosophy that shows you're in good hands and makes the book a great choice to learn from. The chapters on functional and reactive programming were welcome to give a more rounded feel to TypeScript best practices, as TS codebases tend not to follow pure OOP patterns and paradigms, particularly for frontend apps. Both sections seem as if they could be broken out into their own books, and I'd like to read more from the author on the topics.I would have preferred a more active teaching style with worked exercises at the end of chapters, but that is a personal preference rather than a criticism. It would also be interesting to see the author take a small codebase and refactor it using patterns to demonstrate the impact they can have, or lean more on patterns in use in popular open source TypeScript codebases to show them outside of a theoretical context. But the accompanying GitHub repo provides plenty of examples to play and experiment with, and the book will continue to serve as a useful reference for me.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
