In his book "Unveiling the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF)", published by Packt, Tom Marsland has simplified RMF processes with practical examples showing how organizations can leverage it for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Since it was first introduced in 2004, The NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) has been the standard for establishing a structured process designed to help organizations effectively manage cybersecurity and privacy risks throughout the lifecycle of their information systems. In his book, Tom Marsland covers the basics of implementing NIST RMF using easy-to-understand language to help cybersecurity practitioners at any level. With the explanation, Tom also covers why each phase of the NIST RMF is an important part of the organization’s overall risk management and cybersecurity posture. The case studies sprinkled throughout the book provide real-world examples of roles and responsibilities, as well as the application, implementation, and validation of each step of the RMF process across multiple sectors. The advanced topics section provides detailed tips on using RMF with continual monitoring, incident response, and cloud security. The book ends with a look ahead as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes standard practice and a risk that needs to be managed as part of the RMF. Any cybersecurity or audit professional using NIST’s RMF should have this book as a reference.

I picked up a copy of Unveiling the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) because I wanted to better understand the RMF process. As a cybersecurity professional I knew about NIST and its importance, but I did not have much experience with compliance. After reading this book I better understand how to implement this framework for use in my environment. The book also ties NIST with increasing the efficiency of incident response and investigations of security incidents. Overall I believe that Unveiling the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) does a great job of educating the reader on how to manage and mitigate risk.

I recently received a copy of Packt Publishing’s Unveiling the NIST Risk Management Framework: A practical guide to implementing RMF and managing risks in your organization by Thomas Marsland. This guide breaks down using and implementing a risk management framework within your organization. Understanding the risks at the organizational and technical level are the first steps in managing and monitoring the vulnerabilities and threats of your organization. This book breaks down the NIST RMF in a manner that allows you to go step by step through the process. These steps allow you to build a risk aware organization from top to bottom. NIST makes documents available at no charge, including the NIST SP 800-37 v2, which this book is based. The book breaks down this document and is an excellent accompanying guide to the document. Chapter 9 and 10 are particularly helpful with guidance for the RMF for cloud implementation and use case scenarios, respectively. For anyone that wants to understand how to implement a risk management framework within your organization, I highly recommend this book.
