Cortex-M has been around since 2004, so why a new book now? With new microcontrollers based on the Cortex-M55 and Cortex-M85 being introduced this year, Cortex-M continues to expand. Great book about many aspects of developing embedded software for the Cortex-M processor. Reading this book, I found new insights into embedded development. The links to additional resources are great for digging deeper into individual topics. I liked how topics were presented, for example, the chapter on Optimizing Performance. This chapter presented a simple example of three different implementations of a dot product calculation. The implementations were run on three different hardware platforms targeting different Cortex-M processors, across several compilers, and different optimization settings. The performance was measured using two different methods. The example was easy to follow and effectively demonstrated the aspects of optimizing performance.

For being "Insiders" with such colorful bios, this is a pretty underwhelming book. I was excited to see all of the emerging ARM technologies in the preview. Unfortunately that's the last place you will see most of them. The material is well organized, but it's almost all very surface level information followed by "if you want any detail go to these web pages you could have accessed for free to begin with." I feel like Erich Styger's MCU on Eclipse blog, along with the ARM developer pages/blogs will give you anything you get from this book without the price of admission.

I am a somewhat experienced embedded developer but have yet to develop on ARM, so I thought this book sounds like a perfect fit. It is not.On a first glance it seems to cover all the important topics: performance optimization, security and even some machine learning. But once you read and expect some in-depth coverage of these topics you will be disappointed. It's a wild mixture of generic statements and then overly specific examples that would even require to buy two separate hardware boards.It get's two stars because it has a well maintained accompanying git repository which is nice and because it provides some valuable links and hints to where actual information about can be found elsewhere on the internet.
