This book is excellent for beginners not only does it explain the basic architecture of an FPGA and how to use it but it also provides excellent example code to easily get you started. It covers why use an fpga or an ASIC chip, how to use an FPGA in an embedded microcontroller, how to use various inputs like a digital microphone. The various projects such as how to build a calculator, keep a car in a straight line are easy to follow along to anyone with basic electronic knowledge.

First of all, what the most important thing for a book is, interesting enough for readers to stick on reading. This book has made it at least for my impression.Especially when you are working in the digital IC design area. I recently involved in a project which FPGA is a necessary part of it. I have spent many my time learning the FPGA related knowledge scattering among internet. Now with this handbook, most of my previous question get resolved. Not only the HDL syntax, but also those advanced design key points including advanced interface design, FPGA resource utilization etc. What surprised me is the book also mentioned AI and ML topic in the nowadays FPGA. My point is, living the rapid AI growing time, everyone should at least know about how to deal with them, especially for engineers, we have to acquire the skills of implement AI&ML into our area to enhance our competition ability.Overall, it's a good book if you want to learn FPGA and working on it like me. It's interesting to read and also useful as a handbook for your work. The time invested in it will be paid.

This book starts with explaining the basics, slowly bringing the reader from absolute beginner to being comfortable with how the available tools work. The first few chapters introduce the usual FPGA topics, such as the various logic gate types and the two main hardware description languages, VHDL and Verilog. Then the book shows simple generic combinations that form the basis of much of FPGA usage, focusing on the Xilinx NEXYS A7 board, and then moves on to sequential designs. All the while, the text is supported by plenty of clear code examples like the one in the pic.At this point, the book moves into more practical usage, combining the knowledge from the initial chapters to create a calculator using state machines, and connecting to external devices such as a microphone and a temperature sensor on the I2C bus, and extending this to include both fixed point and floating-point data, touching on ARM's Advanced Extensible Interface streaming. The book continues to explore connecting to external devices, including DDR memory, VGA controller and PS/2 keyboard interface, allowing the reader to display data on an external screen. The content becomes a little more advanced at this point, introducing UART and SPI interfaces, and using the Microblaze embedded soft processor which hugely expands the capabilities of the FPGA code. Finally, it finishes up looking at the design principles of reuse and encapsulation and how these are achieved in Verilog, as well as other less used features, along with how to avoid gotchas in FPGA development.Clearly this is a well thought-out, well-structured book, where the reader can follow it from the start to learn about developing with FPGAs, or even jump to parts to help them resolve problems with their own code. If you're just starting out with FPGA development or thinking about how FPGAs might be used in your projects, this is a great book.

Great book for first introduction into digital logic. The book is nice for self-guided learning and great for an aspiring hobbyist. It has simple projects throughout with both vhdl and verilog examples. I had to buy a nexus a7 to follow along.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
