Key benefits

  • Cut through the complexities of designing a monolithic web architecture using micro frontend architecture
  • Explore architecture patterns for building large-scale applications
  • Learn how to build, test, and secure your micro frontends efficiently

Description

Micro frontend is a web architecture for frontend development borrowed from the idea of microservices in software development, where each module of the frontend is developed and shipped in isolation to avoid complexity and a single point of failure for your frontend. Complete with hands-on tutorials, projects, and self-assessment questions, this easy-to-follow guide will take you through the patterns available for implementing a micro frontend solution. You’ll learn about micro frontends in general, the different architecture styles and their areas of use, how to prepare teams for the change to micro frontends, as well as how to adjust the UI design for scalability. Starting with the simplest variants of micro frontend architectures, the book progresses from static approaches to fully dynamic solutions that allow maximum scalability with faster release cycles. In the concluding chapters, you'll reinforce the knowledge you’ve gained by working on different case studies relating to micro frontends. By the end of this book, you'll be able to decide if and how micro frontends should be implemented to achieve scalability for your user interface (UI).

Who is this book for?

This book is for software/solution architects or (mostly lead) developers as well as web developers and frontend engineers. Beginner-level knowledge of HTML and CSS along with a solid understanding of JavaScript programming and its ecosystem, including Node.js and NPM, is assumed.

What you will learn

  • Understand how to choose the right micro frontend architecture
  • Design screens for compositional UIs
  • Create a great developer experience for micro frontend solutions
  • Achieve enhanced user experiences with micro frontends
  • Introduce governance and boundary checks for managing distributed frontends
  • Build scalable modular web applications from scratch or by migrating an existing monolith

I really enjoyed this book. I'm familiar with compositional patterns but I didn't have any experience with this architectural approach to building user interfaces. This material is approachable to anyone that has web development experience with HTML, JavaScript, Node.js, and NPM. The Micro Frontend approach is inspired by a similar way of building microservices. You build modules in isolation to avoid complexity and a single point of failure. This book will be of most use to architects, lead developers, and lead designers.I own a training company and often look for books that can be used as courseware. I really like the fact that the author has several projects/case studies, easy-to-follow hands-on tutorials, and even self-assessment questions making this a natural fit for training material.Scalability is a big payoff to this approach and the author does a great job of explaining different styles and how they are put to use. After building a foundation for how things work you'll have the benefit of case studies to reinforce what you have learned.I really found all the topics in the book useful. You'll learn how to choose the correct micro frontend architecture, design compositional UIs, and how to build frontends that are scalable and modular in your applications.

With more than 4 years of experience in micro frontend development, where one would think that it's a lot, after reading this book I realized how much I didn't know. The author really took the time and analyzed many different ways on successful micro frontend development taking into account, not just the tech aspects, but also other POVs like business, team structure, or UX/UI. All this is witnessing a high level of experience and deep understanding of the given topic, which just infuses an extra dose of confidence that we can trust and rely on the examples from the book as a solid foundation to build upon our next Micro Frontend application. What I find especially useful, are the Youtube videos accompanying every chapter together with GitHub repositories, where the author is taking the opportunity, in his own words, additionally bring closer the examples to the readers. This read would be strongly recommended for most web developers because it can be a source of great ideas that a lot of “modern” architects and SW engineers are not even aware of.

This is a book aimed at web developers that have already some experience with web technologies and node. I really enjoyed this book, it is extremely clear and detailed, it covers the theory behind micro frontends and why you want to use them for your web apps, the author covers different kinds of implementations, going from the easier to the most robust and complex ones.

I've read essentially all of them and while the book of M.Geers is a good practical book for server-side composition and the one from L.Mezzalira contains a lot of content on the organizational aspects, this one is definitely the best alrounder. What distinguishes this book from the others is that it really emphasizes the importance of loosely coupled solutions.I cannot agree with one review that indicates that the book does not contain module federation (maybe the author of that review should have read the book before posting a review) - it does. However, since module federation is just one of the possible tools and the book is about microfrontends as a whole I think its fair that its only touched twice and not the center piece of the whole book. Personally I would have loved to see more content on single-spa, but then again the idea of the book is not to just introduce some frameworks but rather to teach how microfrontends work and how a good solution should and can be built. All in all I surely give this book 5 stars. Not only did it really go into details on very important topics it also provided tips and tricks that can be used with any kind of distributed system. Wonderful!

A great introduction into microfrontend architecture. I would recommend if you are interested in that. The author does assume some level of familiarity with programming (especially js given we’re discussing frontend architecture) but that’s expected. If you are not an experienced programmer you have no business implementing broad architectural design so best to learn the basics first.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
