Key benefits

  • Real life applications and case studies of automation curated from authors rich experience
  • Overcome tricky automation and control issues in the manufacturing process
  • Implement automation in manufacturing for higher efficiency and productivity in the industry

Description

Engineering disciplines focus mainly on programming control systems, while the challenges they overcome or their industry applications largely go uncovered, leaving a huge gap between the theory and industry practices. This leads to engineers learning about subjects without actually understanding their purpose and entering the industry needing months of training. The Art of Manufacturing cuts across pedantic theory and reaches practical applications. You’ll begin your learning journey by starting from the product and moving backward to the manufacturing landscape, factories, machines, and finally to the automation and control challenges faced in manufacturing. The book builds on the authors’ valuable on-field experience, providing a detailed view of the manufacturing of real-world products, while simultaneously providing various analogies and references to daily tasks. As you advance through the chapters, you’ll work on interesting control problems and find out how to overcome them in applications. The concluding chapters offer you a sneak peek into the future of automation and factories. By the end of this book, you’ll be able to relate a real-world product with an associated control challenge and discover ways to overcome these challenges.

Who is this book for?

The book will interest an inquisitive student of engineering (electrical, electronics, mechatronics, E&TC) who wishes to explore beyond the classroom textbook content. It will also serve as a teacher’s handbook helping the lecturer bring the flair of industry into the classroom. Moreover, it will be useful for a practicing engineer, with cross-disciplinary knowledge that is needed to manufacture any real product. You must have basic knowledge of electronics, electrical, and mechatronics (engineering).

What you will learn

  • Understand the role of machines, factories, and plants in manufacturing a product
  • Explore the manufacturing landscape and its continuous evolution
  • Use practical applications to mitigate control challenges in manufacturing
  • Resolve implementation challenges of various applications in a machine
  • Discover how humans and automation work together in factories
  • Find out how to solve the same control challenge in different ways
  • Discover links between Industry 3.0, Industry 4.0, digitalization, and lean manufacturing

Very detailed book. The summaries at the end of a section are very informative and bring the information of the chapter back to the point in a concentrated way.I especially find the second part interesting: "Automation and Humans".The explanation using a washing machine is great and makes it easier to understand.

The book covers the complete setup of manufacturing landscape in layman's term, with a problem solution approach of how automation helps in overcoming the challenges. The book bridges the wide gap that is there between what we study in college to what we apply on job and on field. Effectively the author is able to justify the need for automation and why it is necessary to some extent at the same time why human intervention may be required. The author has used diagrams effectively throughout the book that enables the reader to develop their conceptual meanings and establish the correct relationships between concepts within the subject. The author does mention about IOT and AI at the end but does no go to deep into it as the objective was to give a brief overview of where the manufacturing and automation industry is heading. A good read for those who in some way or the other are associated with this subject.

This book is a comprehensive guide in control engineering. Real life examples of automatic controls of temperature, level, movement (motion ), weight and volume are all explained in detail in the book. The authors’ wide experience in different industries is clearly seen in the subject elaboration. The real beauty of the book is its simplicity. No mathematical equations, complex graphs or control diagrams are used. Block diagrams effectively explain complex controls in different applications. This book bridges the gap between the theoretical knowledge learnt in an engineering college and the practical applications seen on the shop floor. A must read for all who wish to understand automation and design or maintain such systems. Also a stepping stone for Industry 4, Smart factory, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

Having my entire career in the IT industry, I got an opportunity to review this book. Initially, I was skeptical about my comprehension of the book, given its technical nature. However, to my surprise, the book introduces the reader to the world of manufacturing, explaining real-life case studies and products for better understanding. The book is very well structured and explains engineering concepts and their applications. In spite of being from IT, I was able to comprehend and follow the book right till the end. For a technical book, it was very interesting, I never felt like keeping the book down. I would recommend the book to engineering students and professors, and a must-have for those aspiring to join the field of automation and manufacturing (or anyone wanting to learn about automation). There are so many examples and case studies covering various manufacturing industries with a good mix of electrical, mechanical and software concepts. Moreover, the book is product agnostic, doesn't contain sales and marketing fluff, it is knowledge-centric.

First and foremost, I'd like to thank Ninad and Sivaram for writing a book that anyone interested in the manufacturing industry should read. This was a quick, easy read with a lot of exciting information about the role of machines, factories, and plants in manufacturing. The book's content, chapters, takeaways, and summary at the end are all very well thought out and organized. The authors' logical approach in writing this book is refreshing and highly commendable for anyone seeking and striving for industrial exposure in manufacturing. The book provides a new perspective on the manufacturing landscape, automation, control challenges, and various applications of automation in manufacturing operations for curious laymen, inquisitive students, and practicing engineers. The best part of this book is learning how humans and automation interact in factories, as well as how terms like Industry 3.0, 4.0, digitalization, and lean relate to one another. This book will guide you on how to apply engineering principles in the real world. A must-read book for all students who want to work in an automation company and further explore these concepts in a practical setting.Authors deserve praise for their excellent work.
