  • Explore the complexity of a system and learn how it can be commissioned as an effective resource
  • Filled with comprehensive explanations, practical examples and self assessment tests

Description

Systems engineering helps in developing and describing complex systems. Written by an internationally-recognized systems engineering expert, this updated edition provides insight into elements to consider when designing a complex system that is robust and successful. The latest edition covers the new approaches of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and its deployment techniques using the Trinity approach. You will learn about the system engineering life cycle and processes to implement. Effective systems can be built only when the system is designed with close attention to detail, meaning each aspect of the system is recognized and understood before the system is built. The book explains in great detail, different system models and visualization techniques, with a focus on SysML, to help you visualize a system in the design phase. You will also learn various verification and validation techniques to ensure your system design is ready to be implemented. The book ends with key management processes, systems engineering best practices, and guidelines, with a new section on effective approaches based on the author’s impressive 30 years of experience in the field. By the end of this systems engineering book, you'll be able to apply modern model-based systems engineering techniques to your own systems and projects.

Who is this book for?

This book is for aspiring systems engineers, engineering managers, or anyone looking to apply systems engineering practices to their systems and projects. While a well-structured, model-based approach to systems engineering is an essential skill for engineers of all disciplines, many companies are finding that new graduates have little understanding of MBSE. This book helps you acquire this skill with the help of a simple and practical approach to developing successful systems. No prior knowledge of systems engineering or modeling is required to get started with this book.

What you will learn

  • Study the three evils of systems engineering: complexity, ambiguous communication, lack of understanding
  • Learn how to deploy MBSE using the Trinity approach
  • Receive invaluable information about the philosophy of modeling from a seasoned professional
  • Understand the MBSE life cycle and how design, verification, and validation fit into it
  • Explore processes and concepts such as activities, stakeholders, and resources
  • Discover how needs fit into the life cycle and how to comply with relevant processes
  • Gain a deeper understanding of how to model effectively and efficiently

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as it ties several key Systems Engineering concepts together into a unified whole.I appreciated the extra detail on the "3-evils of Systems Engineering" as this clearly explains what MBSE is trying to overcome. The book has an excellent balance of theory, practical application and identifies plenty of lessons learned or best practices. I especially liked the use of views throughout the book. The sections that discuss Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and Object-Oriented Systems Engineering Methodology (OOSEM) were very helpful in tying my previous knowledge on the subjects with a greater understanding. The chapter on Next Steps was a welcome surprise as it discusses the deployment of MBSE.This book will be an excellent resource as my organization transitions from Document-based Systems Engineering to MBSE.

[E-book versions reviewed (Kindle & PDF formats)]This is a fantastic overview of Systems Engineering by Professor Jon Holt, in which he covers many of the fundamentals of Systems Engineering in simple and clear language. However, this is enriched through the use of SysML models, which helps to visually represent the topics he explains in a variety of diagrams. Put simply, he uses Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to represent the topics in the book, which is a fantastic way to learn MBSE. Whilst the heavy use of SysML diagrams may seem repetitive at first, the consistency and coherent use of such models really helps to explain the concepts easily. In a lot of ways, this book is an expansion of another book written by Jon and published by INCOSE UK; Don't Panic! The absolute beginners' guide to MBSE. Not only does he expand on the concepts covered in there, it is one reference captured in the book alongside many other publications and literature, which makes this a really useful repository if you are looking for another book to support your development as a systems engineer.I also appreciate that the publisher, Packt, provides an opportunity to download a DRM-Free PDF version of this book to all customers, regardless if it is the paperback version or the ebook version (e.g. Kindle). In summary, I think this is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in Systems Engineering and should definitely be in your reading list!

Recommended for software (like me) and systems people. I had only come into contact with MBSE tangentially, but this book has been really useful in filling in and extending that knowledge. It will be very useful for a project I am working on just now, so perfect timing. The book is suitable for practitioners of Systems Engineering who want to dust off the theory, and improve their practise. The book covers the basics (what is a System, lifecycles and processes) and then goes into techniques (Model Based-SE). The book is very detailed, and split into easily locatable sections. There is a lot of text on modelling the design, and verifying that the model is correct, which is the whole point). As with some other Packt books I have read this one has lots of worked examples for most chapters for self-study and embedding knowledge. I have long since learned NOT to skip these sections as you miss out a lot of the worth of text books like this. The most use to me were the chapters on deploying MBSE and simply the Art of Modelling. These are overview, high level sections, which complement the earlier more detailed sections well.So in summary the book is good for students or neophytes (like me) and long term professionals who want to go back and refresh and hone their skills.

This book offers a comprehensive guide to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), targeting the three core challenges: complexity, ambiguous communication, and lack of understanding. The book introduces the Trinity Approach, a unique methodology for deploying MBSE effectively, and provides insights from a seasoned professional on the philosophy of modeling. Readers will learn about the MBSE life cycle, including design, verification, and validation, explore essential processes like stakeholder involvement and resource management, and understand how to integrate needs while complying with relevant guidelines.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access.
