Key benefits

  • Speed up queries and dramatically improve application performance by both understanding query engine internals and practical query optimization
  • Understand how the query optimizer works
  • Learn about intelligent query processing and what is new in SQL Server 2022

Description

SQL Server is a relational database management system developed by Microsoft. As a database server, it is a software product with the primary function of storing and retrieving data as requested by other software applications. This book starts by describing the inner workings of the query optimizer, and will enable you to use this knowledge to write better queries and provide the query engine with all the information it needs to produce efficient execution plans. As you progress, you’ll get practical query optimization tips for troubleshooting underperforming queries. The book will also guide you through intelligent query processing and what is new in SQL Server 2022. Query performance topics such as the Query Store, In-Memory OLTP and columnstore indexes are covered as well. By the end of this book, you’ll be able to get the best possible performance for your queries and applications.

Who is this book for?

This book is for SQL Server developers who are struggling with slow query execution, database administrators who are tasked with troubleshooting slow application performance, and database architects who design SQL Server databases in support of line-of-business and data warehousing applications.

What you will learn

  • Troubleshoot queries using methods including extended events, SQL Trace, and dynamic management views
  • Understand how the execution engine and query operators work
  • Speed up queries and improve app performance by creating the right indexes
  • Detect and fix cardinality estimation errors by examining query optimizer statistics
  • Monitor and promote both plan caching and plan reuse to improve app performance
  • Troubleshoot and improve query performance by using the Query Store
  • Improve the performance of data warehouse queries by using columnstore indexes
  • Handle query processor limitations with hints and other methods

Here are a few of my summarized thoughts on the book.Thorough - twelve chapters, and almost 450 pp.Modern - includes discussion of the features like the Query Store, and updates to SQL Server 2022 features (Intelligent Query Processing additions).Code samples – lots of them, and nice that the code used in the book was downloadable from GitHub.Surprised - I was surprised about the recommendation to use the DTA (Database Tuning Advisor). I didn’t think many people took that seriously. I was even more surprised at the recommendation to use the “Data Collector”; I didn’t know that feature was taken seriously and I’ve heard of a number of objections about it.At least one new thing learned – I didn’t know XML Plans have a published schema (p. 39). These schemas were under my nose all these years but I wasn’t aware.Lots of pictures, including pictures of index trees.Thorough treatment of statistics. Examples of Trace Flags.Very thorough description of In-Memory OLTP, including the history of updates to the feature set.I liked the added topics on data warehousing and query hints.

I had the great opportunity to review this book. It is so full of code and examples and samples and stories and explanations. It can show you behind the scenes; the why of how things work the database engine. Learning these topics will help me understand performance tuning.“To understand a thing is to gain the power to change it. ”As a DBA, I would use the knowledge provided here in to expand my own, and this assist me in my day to day job.As a Data Architect, I would use this to stretch my own knowledge and ensure I know the deeper knowledge provided. As a consultant, I would use this book and it's contents to better learn how to dig deeper to solve my clients needs

ConclusionThis book aims to give you the tools and knowledge to get peak performance from your queries and applications. It differs from other performance related books by concentrating on the factors that influence the production of a good execution plan, and thus improve performance. The book is generally easy to read, this is quite an achievement since some of the concepts are deep and undocumented. There are good links between the chapters, helpful website links for further information, good diagrams to support the discussions, and helpful example code to support the assertions made. I also enjoyed the author’s pragmatic approach e.g. use hints as a last resort, and always test recommendations on your own system. The original edition of this book had appendices relating to: References, White papers, Articles, Research papers and Books. I found that section very useful since it contained some great resources listed for investigating topics further. I had wished other books contained something similar. However, this section has been removed from the current edition of the book. This book is an update of an earlier SQL Server 2014 edition. Excluding the 2 new chapters (Query Store and IQP), I would estimate it is at least 80% similar to the 2014 edition of this book.It might be argued that the book is not as diverse as it could be, since it doesn’t cover other aspects of performance e.g. RAID levels, SQLDIAG, wait stats and queues. I think this misses the point, the book concentrates on those factors that influence the quality of the execution plan. The book is suitable for intermediate to advanced level developers, and should take your level of understanding of performance tuning in general, and optimizer in particular, from level 5 to 8 or 9. Although the book is primarily for SQL Server 2022, it typically indicates in which version of SQL Server a given feature was introduced, so should prove useful in earlier versions.I enjoyed reading this book. If you spend time troubleshooting performance problems, or you want a deeper understanding of the optimizer and the factors that influence it, I can heartily recommend this excellent book.

As a database administrator a key skill required is performance tuning and query optimization. Besides hardware issues most of the times we end up finding an inefficient query causing an app or a report to run slow. Sometimes a query that runs faster to get he results may not be efficient, what if the developers understand how SQL Server processes their queries, how it generates a plan, parallelism, parameter sniffing and so on, and the best practices to follow to write an efficient query to avoid them all, tools available parse and optimize the query such that there are no locking conflicts, here is an excellent book that uncovers everything you want to know. Also, for the database administrators it’s going to be a MUST HAVE in your collection if you are working or going to work on SQL 2016/17/19/22 versions. Most of the clients tend to upgrade to latest version but never leverage the advanced features available, while some set the compatibility mode to older versions and run it. Have your DBA and Developers read this book, understand the latest powerful features available and bring it to use. Kudos to the Author for such an amazing book with good examples and a link to GitHub to download the example scripts. There are a few topics that is repeated but since the book is targeted to both newbie’s to advanced level it’s negligible. In summary, a BIBLE for SQL Server 2022 Tuning and optimization for both developers and Admins. Just loved it!!!

I was recently asked to review this book, SQL Server Query Tuning and Optimization by Benjamin NevarezI found this book to be very informative and provided information that could be used by all levels of experience. He provides plenty of code samples which are downloadable from GitHub.It introduced new features introduced in SQL2022 such as Intelligent Query Processing.(Chap10)He dived into statistics (Chap6) and showed how they can be updated to provide a testing environment with production volumes His chapter on the execution engine (chap4) was very good and explained the various paths the engine can take.Excellent explanation of In-Memory OLTP, Query Store, Working with Indexes(chap5) , and Query Optimization(Chap3)In all there are 12 chapter and over 440 pages.A thank you to Nivedita Singh and Packtpub for the opportunity to review this book.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
