In this essential and practical, resources-packed guidebook uncovering four Instructional Design competencies that are the crux of ID, Susan Nelson Spencer offers her expertise with intellectual humility. Highlighting the importance of teaching, writing, creativity, and communication, Susan’s use cases are definitely a must-read for any instructional designer starting in this field. Through her real-life examples, step by step, she helps you think through problems and possible solutions and shares the outcomes and lessons learned. As you read the book, you can’t help but notice that this type of content is typically unavailable in books and can mainly be accessed when you have a mentor or coach in the industry. You genuinely feel as though she is having a one-on-one coaching session with you - what a treat! The bonus: Tons of resources, including links to articles, videos, assessments, templates, and practical, time-saving pointers that any new ID or one entrenched in the field can add to their toolkit.

This book offers a fantastic overview of the core competencies needed in any instructional design role. I appreciate that Susan Nelson Spencer left out much of the fluff and got straight to the point while providing case studies, exercises, and many resources. I found Susan’s writing easy to read, engaging, and encouraging. She gives a lot of actionable recommendations and reflection prompts throughout. “Next-Level Instructional Design” is a small but mighty companion for anyone new to ID, considering a career change, or wanting to be more effective in their current role. However, experienced designers and trainers will also find pearls throughout!

Next-Level Instructional Design provides a enlightening tour of the skills needed to enter the field as well as improve for those already in practice. It covers basic core competencies spanning teaching, writing, creative thinking as well as conveying content. The author presents the details in a easy-flowing, readily digestible format which is not at all tedious to read. The book gets into many technical concepts such as understanding and using various learning models to best present content to learners. As someone relatively new to I.D, I found it full of useful tidbits from choosing your target audience, to leveraging humor, to even insights on avoiding procrastination… If you are thinking to make the jump or as the title suggests, improve your game, I highly recommend…!

I found myself nodding along to several sections in this book that reflected similar struggles I have encountered while working in the instructional design field. One passage in particular felt extremely familiar: Don't skip the project setup meeting. Assuming that stakeholders will behave in the same way due to them working in the same organization definitely lends itself to scope creep, which was identified in Spencer's book, along with ways to prevent it in the future. A must read for anyone looking to break into instructional design or improve their current skill set.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
