Version 7.0 advancements in metrics


In any business, there are important or, at least, interesting metrics. These metrics are simply indicators which one can use to visualize or measure something important. From a more technical perspective, metrics are defined as:

"...groups of numbers that describe some process or activity (always measured over a period of time) ..."

Metrics is a featured enhancement in Splunk version 7.0 and will perhaps be most interesting to system administrators and IT tools engineers. This is because the feature focuses on collecting, investigating, monitoring, and sharing metrics from technology infrastructure, security systems, and business applications in real time—areas that are of primary interest to these folk.

Definition of a Splunk metric

Splunk metrics use a custom index type that is optimized for metric storage and retrieval. Metrics are made-up of a timestamp, a name (for the metric), a value and dimensions. These components are straight-forward:
