Key benefits

  • Explore ways to make your software flexible, extensible, and adaptable
  • Learn new concepts that you can easily blend with your own software development style
  • Develop the mindset of making conscious architecture decisions

Description

Building for maintainability is key to keep development costs low (and developers happy). The second edition of "Get Your Hands Dirty on Clean Architecture" is here to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to build maintainable software. Building upon the success of the first edition, this comprehensive guide explores the drawbacks of conventional layered architecture and highlights the advantages of domain-centric styles such as Robert C. Martin's Clean Architecture and Alistair Cockburn's Hexagonal Architecture. Then, the book dives into hands-on chapters that show you how to manifest a Hexagonal Architecture in actual code. You'll learn in detail about different mapping strategies between the layers of a Hexagonal Architecture and see how to assemble the architecture elements into an application. The later chapters demonstrate how to enforce architecture boundaries, what shortcuts produce what types of technical debt, and how, sometimes, it is a good idea to willingly take on those debts. By the end of this second edition, you'll be armed with a deep understanding of the Hexagonal Architecture style and be ready to create maintainable web applications that save money and time. Whether you're a seasoned developer or a newcomer to the field, "Get Your Hands Dirty on Clean Architecture" will empower you to take your software architecture skills to new heights and build applications that stand the test of time.

Who is this book for?

This book is for you if you care about the architecture of the software you are building. To get the most out of this book, you must have some experience with web development. The code examples in this book are in Java. If you are not a Java programmer but can read object-oriented code in other languages, you will be fine. In the few places where Java or framework specifics are needed, they are thoroughly explained.

What you will learn

  • Identify potential shortcomings of using a layered architecture
  • Apply varied methods to enforce architectural boundaries
  • Discover how potential shortcuts can affect the software architecture
  • Produce arguments for using different styles of architecture
  • Structure your code according to the architecture
  • Run various tests to check each element of the architecture

There are many books about clean architecture, also known as hexagonal architecture. But most of them are very dogmatic. This book is different because it focuses on the practical implementation of clean architecture. It can be used as a guide for your next project to implement clean architecture.I was only missing some more examples, but I highly recommend this book to learn more about clean architecture.

The goal of the book is to provide a proven design path for Clean Architecture. The book describes and uses the architectural style known as "hexagonal architecture", "ports and adapters" or "clean architecture" utilizing the benefits like maintainability, lower costs, productivity and developer joy.The book addresses the main question that all developers have "How do I apply this style to my project?". The book mainly uses Spring for its examples but in a generic way so it is applicable to all Java enterprise frameworks. It is written in a very digestible way, with many practical examples that can be adapted directly. The author provides the need-to-know theoretical background knowledge in a "build-up way" so that the design decisions made in the examples can be easily understood. The book is also small enough to use it as a handbook. As a conclusion if you are searching for book that will extensively describe Clean Architecture and its applications then this book is not for you. If you are looking for a quick guide with the optimal design path then this is the book that you need. if you are unfamiliar with Clean Architecture then you can use this book as a guideline and then go deeper where you feel like it using the referenced resources. If you already are already familiar but you don’t know exactly how to implement this style, or you are having doubts, again you need this book.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter.
