Key benefits

  • Build your career as a full-stack developer with this practical guide
  • Understand how the different aspects of a MERN application come together through a series of practical projects
  • Master the MERN stack by building robust social media, E-commerce store, and web-based VR game apps

Description

Facebook's React combined with industry-tested, server-side technologies, such as Node, Express, and MongoDB, enables you to develop and deploy robust real-world full-stack web apps. This updated second edition focuses on the latest versions and conventions of the technologies in this stack, along with their new features such as Hooks in React and async/await in JavaScript. The book also explores advanced topics such as implementing real-time bidding, a web-based classroom app, and data visualization in an expense tracking app. Full-Stack React Projects will take you through the process of preparing the development environment for MERN stack-based web development, creating a basic skeleton app, and extending it to build six different web apps. You’ll build apps for social media, classrooms, media streaming, online marketplaces with real-time bidding, and web-based games with virtual reality features. Throughout the book, you’ll learn how MERN stack web development works, extend its capabilities for complex features, and gain actionable insights into creating MERN-based apps, along with exploring industry best practices to meet the ever-increasing demands of the real world. By the end of this React book, you’ll be able to build production-ready MERN full-stack apps using advanced tools and techniques in modern web development.

Who is this book for?

This is one of the most useful web development books for JavaScript developers who may have worked with React but have minimal experience in full-stack development with Node, Express, and MongoDB.

What you will learn

  • Extend a basic MERN-based application to build a variety of applications
  • Add real-time communication capabilities with Socket.IO
  • Implement data visualization features for React applications using Victory
  • Develop media streaming applications using MongoDB GridFS
  • Improve SEO for your MERN apps by implementing server-side rendering with data
  • Implement user authentication and authorization using JSON web tokens
  • Set up and use React 360 to develop user interfaces with VR capabilities
  • Make your MERN stack applications reliable and scalable with industry best practices

I am glad this second edition came out with updated code and new projects. The new projects with real-time auctioning and data visualization examples are very interesting. The examples in the first edition book were quite helpful for starting with full-stack web development. In the first edition, the code uses React class components, and this edition uses React functional components with hooks for the same implementations. Being able to compare these changes has been useful for upgrading code in some of my projects. I have also found the skeleton from this book to be a good reference for setting up new full-stack projects from scratch.

I wouldn't recommend relying only on this book if you are new to web development or to the underlying technologies in this stack. It makes a better fit, if you've explored these individual technologies a bit, and are ready to start building your own full-stack javascript web applicationsI think the real strength of this book is the variety of projects it covers. It shows how to use the same setup to build different applications such as a social media platform, an online classroom, and an e-commerce marketplace. It also gives working examples of other library integrations for features like real-time bidding, video streaming, data visualization, and web VR.Having a resource with so many different examples has been super handy for me, especially for exploring and understanding how this stack integrates and works for web apps. You should consider this book If like me you also learn best from running the code and seeing it in action rather than just reading about it.

So far this has been a great read. Supported and walks through the stack from basic to advanced applications. There are a couple of pages that have extremely small text, but not a deal breaker.

This is a great book if you are trying to learn MERN Stack. But before starting with this book you should have intermediate knowledge of JavaScript and which is expected before starting the MERN Stack development. But overall it is a great book.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

Early Access is a way of us getting our content to you quicker, but the method of buying the Early Access course is still the same. Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
