Description

In Building Analytics Teams, John K. Thompson, with his 30+ years of experience and expertise, illustrates the fundamental concepts of building and managing a high-performance analytics team, including what to do, who to hire, projects to undertake, and what to avoid in the journey of building an analytically sound team. The core processes in creating an effective analytics team and the importance of the business decision-making life cycle are explored to help achieve initial and sustainable success. The book demonstrates the various traits of a successful and high-performing analytics team and then delineates the path to achieve this with insights on the mindset, advanced analytics models, and predictions based on data analytics. It also emphasizes the significance of the macro and micro processes required to evolve in response to rapidly changing business needs. The book dives into the methods and practices of managing, developing, and leading an analytics team. Once you've brought the team up to speed, the book explains how to govern executive expectations and select winning projects. By the end of this book, you will have acquired the knowledge to create an effective business analytics team and develop a production environment that delivers ongoing operational improvements for your organization.

This book was so inspiring, and I got so many great advice and great ideas now that I'm in the process of rebuilding my data team.I am always looking for good literature to support the work I do and to gather as much background information as possible. This book was spot on.We have an infinite number of opportunities to use Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence so being able to really pinpoint and solving the right problems will be extremely important. Here I really got a lot of good thoughts from reading this book. I also really liked that this book is up to date and topical using COVID as an example of the lack of control over our data, even do we have all available fancy tools in the world. In addition, it is always important to focus on convincing stakeholders, and John really has great experiences to share on that topic. This will be my go-to book, and I will us this as a favorite encyclopedia for a long time.

This is a book I’ve been waiting for and can place some personal passion in. Data, now Data & Analytics (D&A), has always been critical to a business, its performance, and forward planning. The seminal book, “Competing on Analytics” by Tom Davenport, was the first of its kind to collectively address D&A’s importance. Building Analytics Teams is now leading the way to take D&A to the next step - Analytics 2.0 to borrow others naming conventions - building high performance teams.Let’s call Analytics 2.0 the realization of the need to bring together the rapid growth of D&A, Data Science, Predictive Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and other emerging practices from the laboratories and disparate company approaches into a concise, well operating team. An additional theme in the book is bringing a clear charter of the value of D&A to a company’s lifeline in expectations management, leadership, project selection, and operationalizing analytics.Book reviews cannot say in a few paragraphs what took months to accomplish in each chapter, each reflecting years of experience. Nor do I expect a step-by-step here’s how to do it. John strikes for that balance in this book, blending his experience with the how to of creating D&A teams. As well, John brings additional perspective to how AI will blend in.John references COVID in the Prologue and this sparks a prime example that we have little global control over our data, despite advances and tools. Deluged with poor data quality, reporting, presentation, incomplete data management and governance, the reporting has been anything but consistent. This book addresses a framework many are hopefully using, or will adopt, to improve the collaborative use and sharing of data in critical settings. In fairness, Packt offered this book on the basis of tendering a fair review. The timing was interesting as it was sitting in my Cart on Amazon. That said, they did not read it to me nor create the pages of notes and highlights I created - which brought better focus to my reading.By: Fred Dempster

I have been doing analytics directly for 3 years. When I saw a post from a senior pro I follow saying I wish I had this book 10 years ago, I bought this book. Add to that John has 30+ years in the biz, why wouldn't I want to kick start my knowledge and cut years off my learning curve? I cracked this book and have been devouring it; I'm not generally an avid reader but I can't put this book down. The tips herein aren't how to make a million dollars doing analytics; they're lots of subtle tweaks to avoid potholes and make those small improvements that will get your projects completed successfully and in less time. The running joke in the analytics and data science community is the crazy % of projects that don't see the light of day. This book will help you be part of the small % that make transformational impacts in your business. As someone with 15+ years in my industry but 3 directly in analytics and being close to the inner workings of IT, I'm learning so much about how to be a successful in the analytics space. Guess what, it's not much different from the business side but there are a definitely key differences dealing with IT and technology developers vs. business people.I am writing all over this book, noting key takeaways. I attached pictures of 2 sections that I like:1. There is so much opportunity to make a positive impact with analytics - show your value to the business and you'll have a never-ending stream of opportunity.2. People who excel in analytics are a little different from your average business person. Embrace that. We look at the world a little differently, question everything and usually have a "weird" idea that may or may not work. That's the value we bring.I can't stress enough how great this book is. I'm stopping here with my effusive praise so I can read the next chapter. Thanks John!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen.
