DATA EXTRACTS AND LIVE CONNECTIONS
For the majority of data connectors, Tableau offers you the choice between a live connection (a direct connection to the database) and a data extract (a snapshot of the data). As shown in Figure 2.10, it is easy to switch between the two.

Live connections ensure that you are working with the latest data that is currently available in the database or file you are using. Extracting the data, on the other hand, means importing some or all of the data into Tableau's in‐memory Data Engine. This is true for Tableau Desktop as well as Tableau Server. The choice between the two ways to connect to your data depends on the specific use case, the availability of the database, and the quality of the network connection.
