Description

Scaled Scrum and Lean-Agile practices provide essential strategies to address large and complex product development challenges not addressed in traditional Scrum. This Scrum/ Lean-Agile handbook provides a comprehensive review and analysis of industry-proven scaling strategies that enable business agility on an enterprise scale. Free of marketing hype or vendor bias, this book helps you decide which practices best fit your situation. You'll start with an introduction to Scrum as a lightweight software development framework and then explore common approaches to scaling it for more complex development scenarios. The book will then guide you through systems theory, lean development, and the application of holistic thinking to more complex software and system development activities. Throughout, you'll learn how to support multiple teams working in collaboration to develop large and complex products and explore how to manage cross-team integration, dependency, and synchronization issues. Later, you'll learn how to improve enterprise operational efficiency across value creation and value delivery activities, before discovering how to align product portfolio investments with corporate strategies. By the end of this Scrum book, you and your product teams will be able to get the most value out of Agile at scale, even in complex cyber-physical system development environments.

What you will learn

  • Understand the limitations of traditional Scrum practices
  • Explore the roles and responsibilities in a scaled Scrum and Lean-Agile development environment
  • Tailor your Scrum approach to support portfolio and large product development needs
  • Apply systems thinking to evaluate the impacts of changes in the interdependent parts of a larger development and delivery system
  • Scale Scrum practices at both the program and portfolio levels of management
  • Understand how DevOps, test automation, and CI/CD capabilities help in scaling Scrum practices

The book clearly explains scrum approach, agile mindset, lean practices and the best part is that the book provides the reader with a clear path to connect them all together and implement a scalable incremental process at an enterprise level.

The author has found a great way to lay out the foundational concepts of many scaled agile approaches like SAFe, Nexus, S@S, and LeSS. This is a great book for any Agile practitioner, solutions architect, Scrum Master, or Product Owner who seek to leverage scaled Agile to build business value and streamline Agile adoption. If you are trying to find out which methodology and approach is right for your organization, this is for you.Not all Agile implementations need to be heavy in terms of process and Gary Rupp instructs the reader on holistic yet lightweight approaches using scaled Agile's core principles and concepts. Gary also proposes that a systems-thinking approach provides a conceptual framework that helps practitioners manage backlogs, prioritize work, and evaluate tradeoffs while managing requirements. My favorite part of this text, is the description of the Agile Centers of Excellence (CoE) under new branding, such as "Agile Working Groups," to help people champion transition to scaled Agile replacing organizational bureaucracies with lean, self organizing groups that manage value streams, standards, controls, templates, tools, and staff in areas relevant to their area of focus. This isn't a test prep book, this is a practitioners guide which will enhance your body of knowledge and is a necessary part of any professionals reference library. Solid 5 stars for excellent content, great copy editing, and relevance in today's market with many emergent, and competing Agile frameworks.

Evolving computing technologies and software drive our modern digital economy, and modern Scrum and Lean-Agile practices have been instrumental in supporting efficient and customer-centric development of computer and software-based products on a large scale. In this digital age, companies leverage computing technologies, the Internet, and software to extend the capabilities of their products and services. However, companies can’t merely be agile in their software development practices and ignore the rest of their business. They must also become agile enterprise-wide to compete effectively on all levels of their business. This is especially true in the era of acquisitions and turnarounds.Scaling Scrum Across Modern Enterprises discusses how scaled Scrum and Lean-Agile practices enhance both product development (i.e., value creation) and customer-facing and support (i.e., value delivery) activities. This book is a must-read for those organizations that seek a competitive edge on all fronts of their business.

The Author takes on a complex subject, because as with any subject you will find people with different takes and explanations on what it means and how to do it and provides you with easy to follow information and reasons for steps that are taken. If you are looking for the typical “step 1: do this; step 2: do this” then look elsewhere. This book not only gives you steps to take, but more importantly it gives you the background and reasoning as to why you do these things. This gives you the foundation to be able to make the right decisions, plans to get the job done. My Favorite two chapters in this book are: Chapter 4: Systems Thinking and Chapter 6: Lean Practices in Software Development. Both deal at not only a 30K foot level as well as a down in the weeds view showing how they interact. Additionally the discussion on Business Process Reengineering (BPR) was good to both see and read. Overall, I really liked reading and learning from this book. I have been both developing using agile and managing agile development projects and programs for 16 years, and amount of historical background information and higher-level process information was astounding. A very great book.

Scaling Scrum Across Modern Enterprises is a must-have book for anyone who would like a comprehensive understanding of Agile and Scrum. This book addresses the needs of everyone from the beginner who would like a basic understanding of Scrum to those who are looking to scale its use on large, high value enterprise level efforts. Additionally, Cecil Rupp provides the historical context and progression of Agile, which is a fascinating journey unto itself that you will not find in most books on this topic. This book proves to be timely as the IT industry continues the move to business alignment, moving from a “project-focused” to a “product-oriented” mindset and development practices. Right from the start, the author makes the case for modern Scrum and Agile practices supporting and enabling the need for “business agility.” He then lays the conceptual foundation of Agile to provide the reader with a common understanding before moving into the advanced concepts that result in a detailed comparison of the approaches to scaling. In Section 2, Cecil provides a great look at the major approaches used today to scale Agile by building on the concepts he explained earlier in the book. He is not prescriptive but rather provides a primer that can be used by anyone wondering about the options to take the next steps as demand for larger development efforts dictate.I highly recommend this book for those just starting out as Agile/Scrum practitioners and those of us who are experienced and using it daily. But this is also an great resource for middle and senior managers who want to understand what makes Agile work and the pitfalls that need to be avoided as Agile is implemented throughout the organization.
