Key benefits

  • Discover key differences between Docker and Podman
  • Build brand new container images with Buildah, the Podman companion
  • Learn how to manage and integrate containers securely in your existing infrastructure

Description

As containers have become the new de facto standard for packaging applications and their dependencies, understanding how to implement, build, and manage them is now an essential skill for developers, system administrators, and SRE/operations teams. Podman and its companion tools Buildah and Skopeo make a great toolset to boost the development, execution, and management of containerized applications. Starting with the basic concepts of containerization and its underlying technology, this book will help you get your first container up and running with Podman. You'll explore the complete toolkit and go over the development of new containers, their lifecycle management, troubleshooting, and security aspects. Together with Podman, the book illustrates Buildah and Skopeo to complete the tools ecosystem and cover the complete workflow for building, releasing, and managing optimized container images. Podman for DevOps provides a comprehensive view of the full-stack container technology and its relationship with the operating system foundations, along with crucial topics such as networking, monitoring, and integration with systemd, docker-compose, and Kubernetes. By the end of this DevOps book, you'll have developed the skills needed to build and package your applications inside containers as well as to deploy, manage, and integrate them with system services.

Who is this book for?

The book is for cloud developers looking to learn how to build and package applications inside containers and system administrators who want to deploy, manage, and integrate them with system services and orchestration solutions. Podman in the DevOps world is quickly becoming a viable solution for container management and orchestration so in my opinion this book is an exceptional and critical read in today's IT environment. The authors do a great job at describing the history of the technology and compare and contrast it to Docker when possible to help those already familiar with that option. Buildah and Skopeo are also covered to present a holistic approach to defining a container management solution with Podman that's right for your needs. The book has rich and detailed examples of what is being discussed in each chapter and takes the time to not only define, but gives a history for the technological terms being presented as they come up. As a Google Cloud Architect, I would say this book is beyond a solid choice for anyone looking to feel at home and proficient with Podman's ecosystem when they finish reading it...and recommending it to others later. Not mention, it is very readable for a technical book and thought out very well in it's approach. Thank you to both Red Hat authors for taking the time to put this together and nice job!

If I had had this book I would have avoided hours and hours of research on the history, evolution and adoption of containers. Here you can find a well written (with commands and code examples) guide) about what every DevOps should know about containers.

This book has cleared up any confusion I had while working with Podman. As an intern thrown into the debugging Podman without knowing the larger picture had its difficulties. This book shows clear examples of how to build containers, how to run them in pods as well as the differences between docker and podman. I specifically found the section covering Kubernetes YAML resources very helpful.

The book is great for developers looking to learn how to build and package applications inside containers. The detailed comparison between Docker and Podman helped me understand Podman's daemonless approach as a container engine and the benefits it brings like allowing rootless for better security. The story based approach of the book resonated with me and helped me absorb all the great information. I see Podman being a really viable option for container management and orchestration and highly recommend you read this book!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
