Description

Are you a software developer, systems designer, or computer architecture student looking for a methodical introduction to digital device architectures, but are overwhelmed by the complexity of modern systems? This step-by-step guide will teach you how modern computer systems work with the help of practical examples and exercises. You’ll gain insights into the internal behavior of processors down to the circuit level and will understand how the hardware executes code developed in high-level languages. This book will teach you the fundamentals of computer systems including transistors, logic gates, sequential logic, and instruction pipelines. You will learn details of modern processor architectures and instruction sets including x86, x64, ARM, and RISC-V. You will see how to implement a RISC-V processor in a low-cost FPGA board and write a quantum computing program and run it on an actual quantum computer. This edition has been updated to cover the architecture and design principles underlying the important domains of cybersecurity, blockchain and bitcoin mining, and self-driving vehicles. By the end of this book, you will have a thorough understanding of modern processors and computer architecture and the future directions these technologies are likely to take.

Who is this book for?

This book is for software developers, computer engineering students, system designers, reverse engineers, and anyone looking to understand the architecture and design principles underlying modern computer systems: ranging from tiny, embedded devices to warehouse-size cloud server farms. A general understanding of computer processors is helpful but not required.

The media could not be loaded. I have also read and reviewed the first edition and found it to be a great read, and like the first this is very digestible and easy to follow. Though you would need to understand technology a bit, I find Jim Ledin's ability to break down complex material to make it much more comprehensible is suburb. This book covers everything from the first edition as well as much more like things such as DDR5 SDRAM, RISC-V variants like SoC and IoT now using AI and ML, iPhone13, NVIDIA GF RTX, Ryzen 9, Cloud Applications, Cybersecurity, Cryptocurrencies, Self-driving cars, Quantum computing and more. This book is wonderful for anyone looking to get into the computer architecture or software architecture industries. It is also valuable for anyone still in school or still seeking out what focus they should start working towards within the computer science or any related technology centered classes. That to me is one of the greatest achievements of a book like this, is that it gives someone such a broad range of knowledge about so many different technologies that one can easily determine what interests them and what does not.Technology is fascinating, and this book does a great job at bringing the reader down to a pretty low level of how it all operates but does not bring you down so low level that you are trying to understand hard to follow proofs or things like this, it is all very easy to read and I highly recommend to anyone into technology.

I read this book and found it useful to get a better understanding of the level below the Embedded Software!! Me being an Embedded Systems Engineer, wanted to understand how the different architectures vary and how their design affects their application areas. I really liked the RISC V section! If you are an into embedded systems / Software, and want to get a detailed introduction of the aspects involved from Computer architecture and organization perspective, then this book serves the purpose!

I was pleasantly surprised while reading this book. I'm used to these topics being presented in a drier, textbook format, but this book was very readable from front to back. It starts off with a look at logic gates, moves onto chip design and assembly, to finally how different solution spaces require different system design. It's breadth is a selling point, it covered material that I encountered in university-level classes, such as digital logic, computer architecture, operating systems, and more. It does, however, lack depth on each of these topics, at most spending one chapter on a core concept. This is not a knock on the book, for I feel it does exactly what it sets out to do, but if you are looking for more focused, I would suggest a targeted textbook or something that dedicates a whole book on fundamental concepts. There are exercises at the end of each chapter. While not numerous, I did appreciate that they were mostly hands-on exercises (e.g. go download a FPGA emulator and write a short program to solve a problem), and did not rely on rote memorization to answer the questions. Thanks to the author for putting a chapter on security in the book - an oft overlooked aspect of design that is only getting more important. The final chapters were, at best, tangentially related to the understanding of how modern computer architecture works (mentioning the sort of system requirements for things like cryptocurrency, phone architecture, etc.); they end up being more about how the domain works rather than any nitty-gritty of system design details. However, I found them to be just as readable as the rest of the book, and enjoyed their content nonetheless. In all, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a broad overview about how the computer works underneath the hood, aspiring systems designer and low level programmers, and anyone looking to supplement drier textbooks to better understand the informationDisclosure: The publisher provided me an early review copy and asked if I would review the book on Amazon. This review's rating and words are my own; I was given free rein over how I would review and rate it, with no suggestions from the publisher. I do have access to this book through other subscription services, unrelated to the publisher's request, that makes the early review copy superfluous in my collection.

This is a must-read book if you really want to learn about computers and digital systems. It is very actual and very good organized. This book starts with a very interesting chapter about the history of computer architecture and its development in time, from the beginning to nowadays, passing for bitcoins, self-driving vehicles systems and quantum computing. The author wrote a very nice review and description of the electronic components that are part of a computer. If you want to know about electronics or already know about it and want to go back to basis and enjoy solving problems and exercises, this book will give you a very enjoyable time.I love specially chapter 4 which is about computer system components like RAM memories, I/O sub-systems, graphic displays, network interfaces, and chapter 5 which is about the relationship between hardware and software, the booting process, Bios, UEFI, etc.If you like technology, electronics and computers, this book is for you and I can guaranty you that you are going to love this book as much as I do.

It has been a long time since I read some hardware books, but reading this was a nice experience.First, set some expectations. If you are expecting a detailed deep, down discussion on some specific topic, or microprocessor, then this book is not for you. Rather, this book uses a breadth-first approach to cover many topics and give lots of food for thought, links, and references to further explore for curious readers. I got to know lots of new development done in this field, and lots of ideas surprised me. I got a chance to learn more about VHDL, RISC-V, assembly language of RISC-V, 6502 microprocessor, and Domain-specific architecture. Especially pleasantly surprised to see the topics on cyber security, blockchain, and quantum computing in a computer architecture book. However, due to my curious nature, sometimes I felt that I needed more. I do understand in that case, it would probably be a multi-volume book. If someone doesn't have much background and wants a broad overview of topics related to computer architecture, then it is a really good book to start with. Bonus point, there are exercises at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to check their understanding and explore some concepts in more detail.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter.
