Comparisons with YAML


YAML is another software language-agnostic data interchange format that is slowly gaining popularity. YAML is a recursive acronym for YAML Ain't Markup Language, and it is commonly used to store metadata such as configurations, schemas, and properties. YAML is considered a human-readable data serialization standard and it depends on white spaces, positioning, and simple characters for line terminators, similar to popular scripting languages such as Ruby and Python. YAML is particular about the spacing between the elements and is not tab friendly. Similar to JSON, YAML key/value pairs are separated by a colon. Similar to text formatting, hyphens are used to indicate list items, unlike JSON where the list items are placed in an array or a child object. Since YAML is software language-agnostic, we would need parsers to understand the contents in that file.
