Chapter 12. Cognitive Computing

So far in this book, we have studied the general principles of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). This is a good foundation and a starting point for creating intelligent machines that can complement and augment human capabilities. This is possible with the ever increasing computational power along with the availability of ever growing volumes of data. However, in order to build artificial machines that can potentially match (or inch closer to) the human brain, we need to develop our understanding of human cognition.

While a tremendous amount of research and thinking has happened for so many decades (or centuries), we are far from fully decoding nature's program when it comes to human cognition. In this chapter, we will initiate the reader on cognitive science and introduce some of the frameworks that are available to take the research forward.
