This is an excellent practical introduction to DevOps using Linux systems. It’s suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience, for individual contributors as well as full organizations. It can be applied to engineering for a variety of different systems, including embedded systems, backend servers, and frontend environments. This is definitely something I wish I’d had in 2016 when I first heard the term DevOps. There’s a lot to sort through and a lot of terminology to demystify. There’s a bewildering array of tools. This would have been extremely helpful then, and will be helpful for me now.Going from the ground up, it covers a number of concepts and tools for both local and cloud platforms, showing their practical application. Even if you use different specific tools, the guidance is useful. These are great skills to have. These include an introduction to Linux and its every day tools, automation with shell scripts, Linux services and networking, Git, Docker, system monitoring, Ansible for Configuration as Code, Terraform for Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD.The last chapter is particularly important, “Avoiding Pitfalls in DevOps”. This covers a number of antipatterns and ways to address them.

The ability to be flexible in your development and operational chains is a critical part of today's development and business needs. I have had the opportunity to get a pre-release review copy of the book The Linux DevOps Handbook by Damian Wojsław and Grzegorz Adamowicz. In The Linux DevOps Handbook, authors Damian Wojsław and Grzegorz Adamowicz deliver an insightful guide to leveraging Linux within modern DevOps pipelines. As an information security leader responsible for enabling organizational agility, I welcomed the pragmatic perspectives on augmenting development and operations with Linux's flexibility. The authors adeptly demonstrate Linux’s immense capabilities supporting automated, scalable technology ecosystems. Methodical coverage guides readers from choosing appropriate distributions through honing cloud-ready configuration management. Crucially, security considerations are consistently integrated rather than tacked on as an afterthought.Useful case studies showcase streamlining legacy processes through scripted infrastructure management and Docker containerization. Even as an experienced practitioner, I gained several techniques sure to unlock additional efficiencies when empowering innovation. For its judicious balance of practicality and inspiration in revealing Linux’s potential to accelerate DevOps outcomes, The Linux DevOps Handbook deserves a spot in any IT team member’s library. This book also provides a great resource to those learning Linux and getting into IT to help supplement and provide additional perspective to the broad ocean of capability that is IT and DevOps.

Having learned cusory Docker and Terraform by following some simple YouTube videos (and some ChatGPT), as well as having an intermediate foundation with Linux and Bash scripting, I find The Linux DevOps Handbook does a good job of pulling these pieces together along with other needed services and concepts to lay down a good beginning foundation for those wanting to enter into DevOps. Let me stress that though this is an introductory book, it is not for someone with no existing knowledge AND experience in either software development or IT operations. If you are unfamiliar with Linux or only used it as a desktop OS, the first six chapters have you covered with everything from going over the main Linux distributions to comand-line basics, simple scripting and networking. From Chapter 7 onward, those services one should expect to see in a DevOps environment are covered. These chapters are clearly written and I found many of the examples helped to nail down the concepts. I finished each chapter having learned something new, with sections bookmarked in both the Advanced Docker and Monitoring chapters, two areas I know I'm deficient in.Whenever I begin learning a new subject, I find I am best served approaching it with two different mediums, video and text being my most common choices. I have found several good videos that address many DevOps topics, and The Linux DevOps Handbook will easily complement them.

This book was thought out rather well and very easy to read and follow. The examples were presented in a professional manner and the ones I ran worked flawlessly. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into Dev Ops and become familiar with the various tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and others.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
