Description

The Essential Guide to Creating Multiplayer Games with Godot 4.0 guides you in exploring the built-in network API for online multiplayer games, offering practical knowledge through concrete use cases. Throughout the book, you'll assume the role of a network engineer in a fictional indie game studio, tackling real-world requests from your peers and gaining expertise in adding new network features to the studio's games. Following step-by-step instructions, you’ll go from making your first network handshake to optimizing online gameplay. You’ll learn how to sync players and pass data over the internet as you add online multiplayer features to a top-down shooter adventure game. This book puts you in a fictional game project team where you set up your first online server before advancing to creating an online chat system and transitioning local gameplay to go online. With a focus on implementing multiplayer features, you’ll create shared world adventures and learn optimization techniques to allow more players to join your virtual world. By the end of this book, you’ll have learned how to set up a client-server network, implement remote procedure calls (RPCs), sync node properties remotely, and optimize your games to create smooth online multiplayer experiences.

Who is this book for?

If you’re involved in game development with Godot and want to add multiplayer capabilities to enrich the shared gaming experience, then this book is for you. You’ll also find this book useful if you’re a network engineer looking to gain hands-on experience with practical projects. I would recommend for new developers looking to expand their knowledge in setting up multiplayer connectivity but I would in fact also apply knowledge on how servers work and what configuration you need when handling outbound connections. Like mentioned before it sets a foundation for initial configuration and understand of cross communication using Godot.

I've been interested in developing multiplayer games for a while now and this book has been a wonderful guide! This book discusses a lot of useful topics such as authentication, lobbies, lag compensation, and ways to decrease bandwidth usage. The author walks the reader through several different types of multiplayer games and provides easy-to-follow steps while introducing new and useful tools. This book should be picked up by anyone who is interested in developing multiplayer games with Godot.

The book takes you through everything a multiplayer game would need. I am a novice in multiplayer and using this book I have been able to setup free Peer To Peer using Epic Online Services in Godot that has lobby and sessions too for free. I liked that the book touched on debugging, profiling and optimizing bandwidth. It also mentioned lag compensation. In the future I would like to learn about advanced networking such as fixed timestep, rollback netcode, input lag compensation and client side prediction.

The book starts with outlining all the basics of networking with Godot. It focuses heavily on how to use Godot's UDP and RPC libraries. Then it goes on to provide practical examples of quite a few games which cover all sorts of game use cases like turn-based, real-time, etc. This is a very comprehensive book get get started with multiplayer and client-server programming.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
