This game development book will broaden your knowledge of Unity and help you to get to grips with Blender's core capabilities for enhancing your games. You'll become familiar with creating new assets and modifying existing assets in Blender as the book shows you how to use the Asset Store and Package Manager to download assets in Unity and then export them to Blender for modification. You'll also learn how to modify existing and create new sci-fi-themed assets for a minigame project. As you advance, the book will guide you through creating 3D model props, scenery, and characters and demonstrate UV mapping and texturing. Additionally, you'll get hands-on with rigging, animation, and C# scripting. This book has a lot of helpful information in it. From working in Blender to exporting what you build in Blender to Unity. From there it delves into Unity to setting up your new asset(your exported Blender FBX file) and creating a modular 3D scene. And adding animations to your turret and player. It goes into many aspects of game development including scripting in C#. The author should mention that Blender has a built in rotation correction tool as Blender and Unity are rotation-ally mirror-ed. Although, it says experimental many people have used it when exporting with success. I am quite knowledgeable with Blender, and Unity. This resource has 421 pages in it. I'll review it some more, and if I see something wrong I'll adjust my review. But right now, I see it as very helpful.

The author has a really engaging way of writing which makes this book very fun to read through and follow along with tutorials. The book includes a range of sequential learning material for the programs. I was super excited to find a lot of C# scripts, which for me, tend to be the most daunting part of game development in Unity. I think book formatting could be a little easier to navigate, and in the introductory region could be a tad more concise, and more concentrated with information. Overall, this is a great resource for independent developers and students of game development.

I'm new to game development so I started working through this book and I'm LOVING IT. In particular, I really like the playful writing style. It makes you feel like the author's right by your side, encouraging you to learn and have a good time. The instructions are detailed and the reasoning is solid. He also slips in a lot of best practices from naming variables to troubleshooting bugs. Lastly, he does a great job providing links to additional resources and pointing out the large community supporting these tools. I'm really looking forward to digging into more of the examples.

Speaking as the author--which I am--I think I did a pretty darn good job considering this is my first book and I had to use all 26 letters of the English alphabet, including 'z' which is correctly pronounced "zee" and not "zed." As mentioned in the book, should the Earth happen to be invaded in the near future this pronunciation will be mandatory so you might as well start getting used to it now.Astute readers will notice that I not only resorted to using nouns and verbs, but also branched out into somewhat clever uses of adjectives, adverbs and prepositions. It is my hope that since embeddable smartchips are not yet available for your mammalian species this learning-book will be an accessible and entertaining knowledge-transfer mechanism for both beginner and more advanced game developers. Ad astra per aspera!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
